the car has 30k miles on it and the oil used has always been PYB.
i recently started doing the oil changes and im wondering if pyb is the best oil for it

oci has been 3k from day one and i dont believe the owner is interested in a longer oci

I dont know if there is a best oil for these GM DI engines. These engines abuse oil. I would just use whatever conventional at 4-5K OCI's. I would not recommend a syn because I would not recommend an extended OCI on this engine.

I'd lean toward synthetic oil for a DI engine, for an added margin of safety, not for extending OCI. I'm not fan of UOA reports but if I owned a DI engine with their lousy track record for fuel dilution and destroying oil I'd get a UOA. I would also ignore the OLM and keep my OCI short [maybe 4000 miles] until I knew via UOA report just how long the oil can go. JMO

Oil is cheap. From what I've read and learned about DI engines from my mechanic buddies I'd be changing my oil sooner rather than later.

Perhaps, depending on the climate you're in an HDEO like Rotella T5 in the 10w30 weight might be a safe bet and since you should probably keep the OCI short (since these engines are tough on oil) it wouldn't be too expensive of an option being that it can be had for $16/gal at WalMart.

I do not agree with this. I think you would get better results of using a heavier grade of oil than using synthetic for "extra margin of saftey" I have not seen were a synthetic holds up better than conventional when there is heavy fuel dilution is involved.

To each his own. Synthetic has some advantages and might help keep things a little cleaner which seems to be another issue the DI engines have.

It's the fuel dilution that is the problem isn't it?
If so, "sooner rather than later" would be my approach too.
PYB would be a good choice I would think.

I chose Pennzoil Platinum because of the low NOACK burn off and seemly resistance to fuel dilution. Even though my fuel dilution is ~0.5%, the wear numbers were very good. My Mazda CX7 with turbo & DI showed good results using a 6,000 mile OCI. In addition; I use the manufactures recommended viscosity of 5w30 and DO NOT recommend a heaver than recommended oil because it can cause other problems with VVT systems.

There is no good answer, only "better than other" answers. PP and Synpower seem to be good choices, based on NOACK. But I can't see spending money on a premium, top shelf synthetic when it's going to be diluted with fuel, probably in the 20 weight range in 4000 miles, and need to be changed. I chose Brad Penn Ultimate Fuel Efficient for my 2010 Nox with the DI. Cheap at 32.00 a case, synthetic blend. It's on GM approved oil list. UOA's seem to indicate it still keeps wear down with fuel present, and made in America, from an American source.

The newest recommendation for oil from GM for the DI engines is the Dexos oils, which are blends.
Make your own or go with a quality blend if you are not inclined to use synthetic oils.
Motorcraft gets high marks here.

anyone know the specific gm certification for this application?

because i will be paying for the oil it will probably not get syn.
im thinking about QSAD or chevron supreme with 3k ocis. any opinions?

If yours is a 2010 then it doesn't call for dexos1. As I recall dexos1 is for 2011 MY and forward.

FWIW my "best" UOA #s for our Traverse was with an HDEO (but of course such an oil isnt warranty approved for this application)

is there a difference in the engines or is that just when they came out with dexos? the only online manual i could find was for a 2011

As far as we can tell there is no difference between these engines.

Quaker State Ultimate Durability and 3,500 mile OCI. QSUD is a great synthetic, easy to find, better protection than dino, and cheap. 3,500 mile OCI because these engines are horrible on oil.
