howdy, I have a briggs 310000 intek engine on my mower.

I have 6qts of 5w-20 syn oil lying around. Can I use it safely in the engine specd for 30wt. I don't think I should, but thought I would ask.
Also would mobil 1 5w-30 extended performance, gold cap, work well in the sm engine.
thanks for any info.

i'm hear to learn

I would not run a 5w-20 in a briggs engine. They recommend 5w-30 synthetic for year round operation. The M1 EP 5w-30 will serve you well, I have used that in a 675 series engine.

ok thanks guys.
I have 6qts of amtecol oil, but more I read up on it, I dont like it. its >70% pao basestock but very weak add pkg.

Does the mobil ep have a lot more additives or a high tbn?

The M1 EP would be a much better oil. It will have both a higher TBN and more additives. Lots of UOA's on this in that section.

I would use sae-30 over 40 degrees and 10w30 under 40 degrees. IMO no 5w30 in air cooled engines . Rotella sae-30 can be had at Walmart for 11.80 a gallon. No need for synthetic in air cooled engines its a waste of money , these run for ever on good conv. oils.

Yes you can and that Briggs will thump happily along using it. We constantly beat our heads against the wall on this topic and seem to loose sight of the fact these engines will run on anything between the consistency of water and liquid asphalt. Will this synthetic 5w20 be the ideal oil for YOUR engine in YOUR specific conditions? Who knows, but it will run happily with it.

Probably the most accurate statement I have ever read on here.
However, it is much more fun to rant about the capabilities of an HDEO in an air cooled application. Don't be a Killjoy!
