Oil Pump Change

98 Mustang v-6. Oil pump is on driver side of engine, oil filter attaches to same. Gasket is leaking between block and pump.

I am going to change out the pump, which is pretty easy. Haynes manual says to pack the gears with Petroleum Jelly (vaseline), to keep air out and to assist with priming.

I figure I will have to change the oil and filter real soon afterwords.

Some say, disconnect the fuel pump fuse and just crank until pressure builds.

What should be right? I am used to older OP's where you attach the drill to the shaft and spin for 30 seconds. No familiar with the newer OP's.

Pack it with Vaseline.
Start it up.
This is a broken in engine with oil in and on everywhere.

Melling has this contraption where I think you screw in an adapter and hose through the oil pressure switch outlet and it bleeds the engine. You can look it up online at their site.

Not sure if the expense is worth it, but that's another option.

For the 1-2 seconds it will take to build pressure I would not worry about it. Do the jelly packing thing and then do an OCI after.

I think I will pack it with vaseline and then change oil and filter after 100-200 miles.

I prefer to use The Blue bottle of STP instead of Vasaline. You don't need much and STP is real sticky so it seals the gears well enough to pull oil quickly.

On those old V6s, always pack the pump with vaseline or lubriplate. Those things are a PITA to prime dry.

Thanks Punisher! Won't the vaseline clog up the oil galleries, or since it is by-product of drilling, just dissolve in the oil? I am going to change out the oil and filter shortly after doing the change out.

the vasoline will turn to liquid with any kind of temp./dissolve in oil also.

The Vaseline will be pumped into the filter and will dissolve, it isn't going to clog anything... I would mostly fill the filter with oil before installing...

Thanks. I will just put the current filter back on, it only has 1K miles on it and run for another 100-200 miles and replace. It is a MC 400 and only cost 5 bucks.

This is one time that I would say you should change the oil hot, not cold.
[Normally, cold is more pleasant ]
