Oil Overfill

I have a car that specs refill of 4.4 liters with filter. 4.732 liters is 5 qt. Would less than 1/3 liter overfill matter for most cars? Is the oil that close to the crank when running?

Zero issue, 0.3 quarts won't do anything. You could dump the whole 5 quart jug out of convenience if you want, it's still far from causing any harm.

This current thread may help. There are others on the same topic which may also help.

I have to assume the auto companies expect auto idiots. So a little low or a little high will not cause an issue. It's not like highly trained mechanics are taking care of each and every car out there. From 16 year olds to 80 year olds, male and female. College kids thinking can it go another week a little low on oil cause I only have a few bucks and would rather buy a 6 pack of beer than a QT of oil.

Others who think of a car as something that gets them from point A to point B. Unless a dash light comes on they are not doing much more than fill with gas.

Some at home probably just dump in a 5 QT jug and call it a day.
Exactly what happens with my Mazda3. Takes 4.7 qts (with filter). Whole 5qt jug goes in. 0 issues. Bit over 1/4qt extra isn't going to hurt anything at all. Has received 5qts per change for 145k miles worth of 3k oil changes, so it would have made itself known by now if it were an issue.

Typically when you overfill the oil, it causes excessive hyperbolic pressure and the engine falls out of the car at 150K. Hopefully no one behind you hits it

Won’t hurt a thing. I overfill my tractor 1/3 qt and it runs just fine. Just like most of you, they require 3.7 qts, I just fill with 4.

Take car for a drive . Park it , pop hood , shut off engine and quickly get out to see if there are any bubbles or frothing on the stick . If so , may want to remove until closer to FULL . All about peace of mind . 🤗

My Mazda 3 and my Mazda CX-5 specify 4.6-4.8 quarts with filter. 5 quarts in and it will be a touch over half way between min/max holes. I typically just drive it and let it sit overnight. Check it in morning and add maybe .2-.3 o get it to the max hole.

No idead why Mazda doesen't just say 5.2 quarts instead......

The problem with this thread is that folks are commenting as though this car is a little overfilled. It’s massively overfilled. Even if it is the case that there is no detriment to massive overfilling, fixing this situation is trivial.

332mL isn't what I'd call massively overfilled. That's less than a can of soda. It's not like there's an additional gallon of oil in the sump.

Was that number mentioned here? My read on that dipstick is at least a quart over.

I think you are looking at something someone inserted into their response as opposed to the original post.

I'm just paranoid because I used to race a Neon ACR DOHC that required you to lower the oil level to avoid the oil getting into the crank, foaming the oil and killing the bearings.
