Is this too much oil?

I have a 2002 Acura TL sType with 204k miles on it. I took it in yesterday to the drive through oil change places and am concerned if they put too much oil in my car. Please tell me if this will hurt my car or does it need to be drained? This was what my dipstick read this morning after I let my car sit overnight in the garage.

Looks like a solid extra quart, especially cold-it' will be higher when warmed up. Unless you have a topsider or some way to pull it out of the dipstick, I would make them redo it. This is why I always check the Transit (the only vehicle in my sig that I don't change), both immediately after & the next day-mistakes do happen.

Did you check to see if they replaced the filter. Looks like they put a standard amount in for an oil and filter change but didnt do the filter so you had the extra 3/4 of a qt still in there.

It's high. But it's running fine. I'd ignore it.

If worried, maybe just spin off the oil filter and put a new one on. I bet that would cut the overage in half (does the manual say it's 1 full quart between the marks? want to say, on one of my cars, it was 0.7qt or something like that).

I am confused. Check a dipstick with it pointed upside down so the oil runs down the stick?

Yes if it was at the level shown before held upside down, then I'd drain about 1.5 qts out and then add a little at a time, let it drain to the pan and remeasure.
I don’t think it is pointed straight up. Looks to be horizontal, unless OP is standing on a wall.

To OP…it is probably fine. As mentioned earlier, they probably an extra quart.

If it were mine, I’d take it back and have them dump it and refill to the proper level with new oil.

Unless the oil change shop is not convenient, I would take the car back and have them fix the oil level. You shouldn't have to deal with it. After all, isn't that the reason you took your car there in the first place, for your convenience?

If it were my car, I'd be getting the level corrected.

BTW, welcome to BITOG, LDJ.

Yes if it was at the level shown before held upside down, then I'd drain about 1.5 qts out and then add a little at a time, let it drain to the pan and remeasure.

Now I'm confused. The way I'm looking at the picture, it appears that the dipstick is being held parallel to the garage floor, that is, horizontal.

The best way to get the oil level in the engine is early in the morning before you go to work. Take the dip stick out of the engine. What ever you see on the dip stick that is the exact oil level

Is it too much oil or is it fuel dilution?
Not sure what you mean by fuel dilution. I basically let the car sit overnight after an afternoon oil change the previous day driving 12 miles from the place to my house. The first time they did it the same day the oil was higher than what the stick shows while the car was still warm since it was a Valvoline drive through oil change center. They drained the oil they put in and added another amount but didn't change the filter since they had done so the first time. Only 4.7 qts went into the car according to the receipt.

Seriously it will not be a problem. At all.

When your engine starts, the drawdown in the sump takes the volume of oil (as measured) lower than the tip of the dipstick.

Some might even say it's better. Either way, drive and don't worry.
