Currently been using the John Deere 15-40 in it. Its a 1993 Ford F-350 w/460. I basicly only use it to haul hay during the summer months and only sees one oil change per year and gets driven maybe 2,000 mi per yr. I need to use the truck and few times this winter and we see temps near zero here in eastern washingon. I was thinking of switching to the Rotella T-6 synthetic year round instead of the Deere oil for better winter starting. Is this a good 460 oil? thanks

T6, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck, or Mobil 1 0w40 would all work year-round. T6 is probably the lowest cost, 0W40 the highest cost but with a bit better winter performance. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck would be my last pick of these three, its a bit thicker and has a lower VI than T6, and you're already overkilling the viscosity by being in a 40-wt range.
Mobil 1 0w40 is marketed as a European car oil, but looking at the specs tells you that its just about perfect for old American big iron, too.

I would keep on with the 15w40 HDEO if it were my truck. Any 15w40 will do fine.

The Lima engines (370,429,460) have lube issues due to the design of the oil system; they lube the cam before the mains.
That being said, any decent oil you choose will work OK for that old motor.
It would be my intent to use a 10w30 year round, but the 5w-40 will work as well.

Mobil 1 0w40 would be a good choice.
Just depends on consumption. I'd use the lightest weight I could that didn't get used up quickly.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm thinking either the Mobil 1 0w40 or the T-6. Deere does make a 0-40 but my dealer nearby does not carry it.
I had a 460 in a work boat up until '92 or so. At that time we were running straight 30 wt. in everything, so thats what the 460 got also. Since you are already using the deere oil I would consider their 10w30, its available in the Plus 50 version and also the Torq Gard Supreme. I am currently using the 10w30 Plus 50 in several different diesel applications and have been getting excellent used oil analysis.

Yep!.. I'm up by the Odessa area. I do mostly grass hay for the horse market. Lots of wheat around me. In fact alot guys have got out of critter hay and gone into wheat and corn.

I just did transmission service (dropped pan filter & fluid change) on my bus. It's due for an oil change next, so I'm gonna put in Rotella T5 10w30. The previous owners (Grand Valley Transit in Grand Junction, CO) always serviced with 10w30, so I'm gonna go with what has worked for the past 154,000 miles!
