Oil for the apocalypse.

Suppose a large previously wealthy country has an economic meltdown. Suddenly citizens are forced to devote

~70% of their income to purchasing scarce food. The remainder goes to rent/electric/

heat/medical/phone/fuel. Citizens have no money left over for maintainence of their vehicles although they

remain mission essential for survival (think Road Warrior).

This situation is unlikely to improve for an unknown amount of time.

What survival oil should those unfortunate citizens have in their cars?

If you stay on this website long enough, you will have a "stash" that should last into the next century.

Suddenly, hoarding looks attractive...prudent even...

Keep that oil stash safe! (hide it with your Krugerrands, ammo and MREs...)

Oil with which to survive in a post-apocalyptic world:
Some kind of a 10w30 HDEO conventional oil that can go for 50,000 miles or 4 years between changes.

Vehicle with which to survive in a post-apocalyptic world:
Dodge Ram powered by a 12-valve Cummins with a Bosch P-pump.

Umm.. I doubt we'll be able to afford gas, if it's even available. So I suspect one oil change per year would be fine on a car I never use.

If times are that bad, I would drain the oil from the crankcase and burn it for winter heat. Plus I doubt the internet and cell phone services would stay up for long post-apocalyptic. I'm thinking, stock up on items that can be bartered, like food grade seed, maybe fertilizer, basic meds, some land, some guns and ammo, etc.

No oil would surely mean no gas either, now if you had a vehicle that could burn that stash of 5W-30 for fuel... Anyway you'd probably be living in your car worried more about where the next meal was going to be found...

Get out the horse, get out the buggy; I'll be riding ole gray and that ain't funny!!

At least the older generation will be able to keep our wits. This younger generation will never survive with out their cell phones, auto mobiles etc.

There's a reason everyone has been buying firearms in record numbers....load em up boys!

i got enough for two years of normal driving for 3 cars. but in troubled times i doubt i will be "normal" driving. so my supply may last 4-5 years! (if i don't barter it!)

After going through a few hurricaines, you will run out of fuel WAY before oil gets to a critical condition.

The only way you can prepare for disaster energy wise is to install some minimal wind and/or solar power, say 200 watts. That way you can at least have some CFL lights on at night and the TV/radio. You really need about 1,500 watts of renewable energy power so you can also cook. But the cost for that much (or little actually) renewable power is way out of reach for most people.

Society is so ill prepared for longer term disaster, it would break down nearly immediately. However, Im not saying we need to prepare, we havent had an apocolypse for 65 million years. Probably be a few million more before anything happens.
