Oil for Riding Mowers

I wouldn't be running 15w-40 in an Ohio winter. If you don't run them in the cold, then you're fine.

However, if you are running them in colder temps, then I'd say to switch over to Rotella 10w-30.

With the oversized filter, my mower takes 64 ounces, 2 quarts...
NAPA full synthetic is $3.79 a quart, filter was $1.99...

Total was just under $10, good price for an riding mower oil change...

Usually just one quart of synthetic or the filter cost that much...

2 quarts is a nice even sump size too.

I would stick with the Rotella ( since you got 20 years from it) or any good SAE 30 which was recommended for your 20 year old engine. I would not use 5/30. You would get no benefit and an increase in oil consumption. For your Kohler, go with the facory suggested weight. Don't go lighter because of someone's recommendation.

I run 10w30 PP in my 2 cyl 20HP B&S. Engine has 120 hours on it and runs like new with no/little oil consumption. Change oil & filter at ~30 hours or once a year. ED

i just put valvoline racing synthetic 10W-30 in my john deere kawasaki v-twin

I changed the oil and filter in my Mother-in-law's John Deere x475 garden tractor that has the Kawasaki FD671D v-twin with a Deere filter and two quarts of Rural King 10w30 full synthetic oil. I also use the same oil in my push mowers.

FWIW, I have used 15W-40 HDEO for my single cylinder B&S in a Craftsman riding mower for the 7 years I've had it. Easy start, economical, no oil consumption to speak of, cheap (relatively) and easy to find. Why mess with a winning thing?
