Kawasaki FR651-V Oil

Does anyone remember back in the 70's and 80's running SAE-30 in our mowers ? I used Castrol SAE-30 because it was the clearest oil that I found. A clearer oil is better, right? 😁
I still use it on some of the machines that come through the shop for service. Briggs and Stratton Vanguard full syn 30. Vanguard has great pricing on all of their full syn products. It is blended by Citgo.

How many tanks fill ups before I change oil? Kawasaki FR652-V. Was not able to keep accurate time. I run it mostly at half speed.
On my kohler push mower engine it's easy to figure because it has one speed and takes 1 hour 15 minutes to use up a full tank.

Yes, as @spasm3 mentioned run it at full throttle. If you are switching on the PTO you could bring the throttle down halfway but then bring it back up.

Agreed.

Everything on that mower was meant to operate at max governed speed. That doesn't mean that you need to have it running at 3600rpm to putt up to the house to get a drink if you're warming it up or not mowing, but if you're mowing the grass, you should have the throttle in the max position. To clarify to some, this does not mean that the engine is at full throttle - only max governed speed. The engine will see increasing amounts of throttle as more load is applied, but to be honest I'd be surprised if most mowers ever actually saw WOT since most have so much power on tap nowadays.

Anybody installed the Cub Cadet Ultima / Enduro Hour Meter Kit? That would be handy for me as I am using the bagger attachment so I stop and start a lot to clippings add to the compost pile.

Is there an oil cooler kit for the Kawasaki FR651-V engine?

Any xW-40 will be fine. I have Mobil Delvac1 ESP 5w-40 in the FR691V on my mower. Being air cooled these engines heat up pretty quick and I don't mow below freezing so just about any xW-40 will be fine.

I chose Delvac1 ESP 5w-40 because Walmart had it and its pretty cheap for a good synthetic.

Does 15w 50 go directly from 15 to 50 as soon as the engine warm up or does it go to an in between weight on a cooler day? What Engine temperature is the FR651-V designed to run at? What is considered too hot?

The "15w" and "50" are not "weights" or viscosity, they are categories designated by the SAE.

A 15w engine oil passes the viscosity tests for those cold, low temperature flow requirements. A 50 passes the high temperature requirements for that category.

It's not like flipping a switch.

The oil has to fall within a certain viscosity range when tested at -20c for the 15w rating and must also fall within a certain viscosity range at 100c to be designated a 50 grade. In the sump the oil is thicker than it would be at it's 50 grade test rating, but considerably thinner than when it is tested at -20c. As it warms up, it gradually thins until it reaches 100c when it has the viscosity of it's grade designation (50 in this case)

You can still find Castrol HD30 in many stores. I used it a few times in my Kawi V-twin and it worked as well as anything else.

As long as the cooling fins are clean, the operator will probably say "it's too hot to mow" before the engine will. Most of the oil viscosity charts in the engine owners manual go at least to 100F outdoor temperature.

Air cooled engines will run in a wide variety of temps, but their operating temps are linked directly to the ambient temps. That's a big reason why many members recommend a 40 or 50 grade oil for the heat of summer.

If the engine were to run in sub-zero temps then a 20 grade would be more than sufficient as the oil temps may never exceed 120 degrees. This was actually experienced by another member with a GX Honda twin.. He ended up having to block some or all of of the air inlet off so it would run warm enough.

100 F is the normal summertime temperature here. Hard to say what is normal now due to climate change. Turned on the heat this morning. Not very cold but very damp.

Early morning April 30 2000 it froze. May 1 2000 it got to 106F in the afternoon.
