hello, forgive me if im asking an oft answered question. what oil change and interval should i use for a 2014 toyota yaris that i keep garaged and undriven for 3-4 month intervals in las vegas?

i got it used from hertz at 42000 miles in may (another tale). it drove fine on its last, then recent generic oil change (i saw the record). it has sat (with a battery tender) from jul to this week when i fly back to l.v. i use it for mostly trips around town and a drive to los angeles. it has about 2k miles to go before its next recommended oil change.

i plan to change the oil before my next drive to l.a. next week. correct thing to do after sitting so long? suggestions for oil brand? i have been referred to a couple of japanese auto shops for best service so i can ask for any oil that i want. one sells eunos.

my back east daily driver is a trouble free 2013 vw passat s with 2.5l and all service is done at the dealer.

thanks very much in advance!

With that (low) milage and yours sporadic driving I will pay attention more towards yours (its) brakes (flawlessnes) then "proper" oil choice

Just change it every 5000 miles with any 5W-30 - conventional is fine, synthetic if you want to splurge. Most important thing is to keep it topped off - it only holds 4 qts. Even if it takes you 3 years to get to 5000, it will OK.

thanks for fast replies!
1. sitting will hurt the brakes? oil and tires i had thought of but not brakes. would you kindly explain more?
2. one year synthetic oil change was my thinking too.
3. change asap after arriving in l.v. before driving to l.a.? im still within factory oci.
4. anyone heard of eunos oil?

Hi there, jstert! Have you considered trying Pennzoil Synthetics for your next oil change? We are currently running our Pennzoil Used Oil Analysis Program this year, and we'd love for you to participate. Through this study, you'll receive a sample of Pennzoil Synthetics to be tested in your Yaris or Passat along with complimentary and unbiased lab results from Blackstone. If you're interested in participating, please send us a private message for more details. Looking forward to your response! - Gena & The Pennzoil Team

i ended up changing my yaris' oil at the 6 mo, 2000 mile mark when i saw a special at superior tire: semi synthetic kendall gt1 titanium for $23, all in. from what little i could learn about it online, this kendall seems to be quite good.

Best advice here. Don't worry about the time as long as it gets up to temp to burn off contaminates before you put it up for storage every year.

Vegas to LA will get up to temp in Jan no problem

I'd take Genna's offer in a heart beat. That is a good oil and a good test for her. Stored car data points are not all that easy to come by ...

Well to be clear, it needs be put up after run hard as in the very last time its pulled in the garage. I store my 240 with a hard run then parking it hot. Little short trips before storing for months at a time just leave so much condensation in the crankcase.
