oil for a marine 351w?

I would probably go with an actual Marine 25-40 for that as I suspect you won't be lightly cruising a mastercraft, if not then Mobil 1 15w50 would be decent and Royal Purple has an HPS line of oils that have high ZDDP levels (maybe their 10-40 HPS would be good). My larger concern would be the gimbal bearing and outdrive oil.
Given it's a MasterCraft I expect it's an inboard with a transmission and a prop shaft and prop.

Update: I’m running Mobil Delvac 1 Extreme 15w40 for the time being. As for the future, it’s still up in the air. I may go to ST or Providence oil, but chances are I’ll stick with the Delvac. If the zinc levels were higher, I would happily run Valvoline Blue or T6. I will most likely run a PGI filter, whether that be PG branded, the new M1s, or the like.

Just an FYI, but the Fleetguard Stratapore filter is an excellent option for this application, that's what we run on ours.

For what it’s worth, HPL steered me towards their CK HDEO 15w40 when I inquired about lube for my boats. He specifically said that was his recommendation because of the sheer resistance. So HDEO it is in the boats! One 3.0l penta, one 4.3l vortec.

Late to this thread, but I have a relative that has a boat with 351W with nearly 2000 hours and is driven hard. That boat has ran on Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W30 for more than 30 years. Engine is spotless inside and runs like a top. Not saying it’s the best option, but impressive none the least.

I agree, however, I would go for Mercury Marine
Quicksilver 25/40 which is in reality a straight 40 weight oil.
You will never hear the valve train clattering like you would with some automotive multi viscosity oils

These engines are very reliable it seems, when properly taken care of. They were initially spec'd for a SAE 30 oil. However, Indmar came out and said 40wt and MasterCraft said 30wt, it won't matter in the end.

I couldn't go Mercury Marine or Quicksilver. I've looked through VOAs and the ZDDP just isn't high enough for this inboard. Outboard, sure, but not a flat tappet engine. I don't hear and valve train clattering thus far with a 15w40 and am even considering a 5w40 in the future, depending upon how late in the season I go out.

if "high zinc" is needed, diesel oil is no longer ok.....there is much on this site and others about this...... out of the 5 choices I would go with VR1 or M1.

Diesel oil is still fine, you just have to be selective. There are many many diesel oils that still have a high zinc content. In general, just don't choose a dual rated oil. API S(X) oils post SL have a zinc limit at a maximum of 1,000 ppm and the newer ones even lower, at least those that are officially licensed. I've thought about VR1. It's not readily available at my local Walmart and I would really like a full synthetic oil. The VR1 full synthetic is hard to come by. Also, it comes in a 20w50 and 10w30. I don't exactly want to go up to a 50wt with how high my oil pressures already are and I don't want to play the mixing game. The same applies for Mobil 1 15w50. Here's a link to the diesel oil VOA database, thanks to @fantastic.

maybe neither of your choices are suitable from your list. Amsoil makes a 10w40 high zinc high performance oil

Which choices? I had 50wts on the initial list before taking the boat out after purchase, where I had very good oil pressure on 40wt, thus my 40wt selection after others comments and @OVERKILL experience with Delvac ESP oil in his Supra. I may possible go the ESP 5w40 route like he did. I don't think there is any advantage to running the Amsoil, which is a good oil, for 4x the price.

What makes you believe the choices were not suitable and to use Amsoil instead?

If VR1 20W-50 seems too thick? Cut it 50/50 with VR1 10W-30. I have done this for my BMW motorcycle.

I don't want to play the mixing game and go about getting two different weight oils, too much work for me.
