But... but... but... it is an approved oil, both via the published specification and on their list I linked. I mean that's the point, right? Mobil 1 0W-40 is approved.

People that jump on the "lawyer can fix it" bandwagon seldom have had experience in actually living through it. It looks good on paper, for the most part its a hassle that one would normally want to avoid, unless you thrive on that sort of thing.
M1 knows its approved, you know its approved..but VW didn't get the memo. Until they do get that memo, you are a very small voice in a noisy German factory with bean counters looking on.

Doesn't Audi sell a few million cars with that engine? Many using 0W-40 oils and loving it?
The thing is, VW did get the memo and VW does know it. They put it on the approved oil list, so I'm still struggling with why a dealer thinks differently.

Dealer appears to be sticking by what's written in the owner's manual, and what's in the owner's manual does make it sound like 5w30 and 5w-40 are the only approved grades. I've got a feeling things got lost in translation, as it's been known to happen in the past.

I also wouldn't count on Mobil1's defense. I posted a while back that since Mobil updated their website, the once 'recommended' 0w20 for the Sonata 2.4, has since disappeared. They now recommend exactly what the Hyundai Owners Manual says...5w20/30. I called and asked about the apparent omission and was promptly stopped in my tracks with a company line. 'We recommend 5w20 and 5w30 only'. That was that. I don't even care that the Mobil 1 0w20 bottles say it's OK for 5w20 applications. They can always blame old Labels etc, and site that the website is the updated information blah blah blah. No thanks, not me.

19 out of 20 people will ONLY BUY the oil grade listed in the owners manual... and really, why shouldn't they? Most don't know the difference between a 0w20 and a 20w50, nor do they care to learn...
So why would an oil company recommend something different from the manufacturer, knowing full well that most people will never step outside the factory recommended grade anyway...

So what does the owners manual really say? Does it say "only use a 5w30 or 5W-40 that meets the VW 502 oil spec"?
I can only imagine what the majority of VW owners put in their engines. I remember the MK4 days like it was yesterday. You even had dealers putting in conventional 5w30 oil with 10K OCI's. We all know what happen after that.

Right. The only requirement is for the specification.
Well, the way I read it, they emphasize the 5w30 and 5w-40 grades, and only say to use other grades if these two are not available. I suppose you can always say that you did not see any 502.00 meeting 5w-40 oils in the store, so you went with 0w-40 instead. At least that's what I'd do.
It's also under "General Recommendations" (except for the weird part under "Notice"). I think your use of emphasize is a good word. Certainly not a requirement however.
I mean, BMW gives me a general recommendation as to how often I should wash my car too

Here is the preceding page, but again, the reference to 5w-40 and 5w30 grades are only in relation to what it was filled with at the factory. I don't see it as a mandatory requirement. But apparently the dealer does.
