Oil for 2012 Chevy Colorado 5.3

My dad just bought a brand new Colorado with the 5.3 v8 in it, the thing is 2wheel drive and it runs! But anyway it has 125 miles on it and we were wondering when he should do his first oil change and what oil and filter to use, he drives it mostly to work which is about 9 or 10 miles one way mix of city and highway

The oil change reminder will tell you. Dexos 1 (or 2) is required.AC Delco Dexos oil or any approved synthetic would be fine.Under warranty I would probably stick with AC oil filters.Just to keep the dealer and GM happy...(but any good filter is ok).

Quaker State Ultimate Durability is Dexos1 and is reasonably priced and an excellent oil also easily obtained at Walmart or any auto parts store. I agree with staying with oem filters for warranty purpose. AC filters in spite of being, for the majority, the ecore design are good filters. I say majority because the original AC solid center core are avaliable in certain sizes. I have used many of them both ecore and original with no issues. This combination is what i would use but it is only a suggestion, you may prefer better or different. As for when to drop the FF the individual car mfg's have their own ideas and is something you may want to consult with GM or your OM on. That being said i would say around 3k myself.

My vote goes for Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W30 which you should find at Wal-Mart. Here a 5 quart jug goes for around 20 Bucks. It is Dexos approved. Too would use OEM Filters. Go by the oil change monitor.

Any major brand synthetic with Dexos approval and OEM filter will be fine.

Use a dexos 1 oil, of your choice, in that
new truck to protect the warranty. I would
do a couple of shorter than usual OCI's with
Pennzoil Synthetic Blend, if it were mine, and
then go by the guide in the owner's manual.

Not that it would hurt anything, but Pennzoil dropped the dexos certification on PP. Quaker State Ultimate Durability might be the way to go. On my 11 Silverado the AC filter speced is the PF48. I assume it's the same for the 5.3 in the Colorado. So far I have only seen the traditional metal core AC filters in the PF48. Good filter for $3.97 at Walmart and keeps GM happy. (Yeah I know about Magnuson Moss-but some things aren't worth worrying over)

I have a P1 on my truck now, but next change I'm going back to the AC. Truck seems to show a little better oil pressure with the AC.
