I know the 4.0L calls for 10W30 - any issues running a 5W30 synthetic year round ?

The *ONLY* 4.0s Ihave ever seen break a piston are all 2000 and newer. I dont understand why but they seem to have it more. That is why I am worried that my 2000 is getting chattery.

The 2.5s pop when used in the mud because people will just spend all day at the red line with them in the mud.

The "experts" on the Jeep forums say to stay away from any 5W-XX oil, but I'm not sure if there is any substantiation behind that. Perhaps it's because most brands of that weight of oil are meant for roller lifters and the 4.0 would still have a sliding lifter. Of the three 4.0 Jeeps that I own, I've just always run 10W30.
As far as the earlier Jeeps breaking piston skirts, one of my '96 Cherokees with the 4.0 broke a piston skirt on January 1st of this year at 1:30AM and locked the engine up tight. Talk about welcoming in the New Year...

The whole point of the narrower range is for supposedly thicker oil or higher hths.

Mobil1
5w30 11cSt hths 3.1
10w30 10.1cSt hths 3.0

Mobil1EP
5w30 10.6 3.0
10w30 10.2 3.1

I recommend Castrol 0w30 or Mobil1 HM 5w30
That much of a difference? Fear the 5w

I personally believe an oil with an HTHS of 3.3-3.5 is about perfect for the 4.0, but there have been several stellar UOA's posted here using PYB 10w30 at 3.1 HTHS.

KCJeep : Which oils (off the top of your head) have HTTHS's of 3.3 - 3.5 ?

No. It is for reduced vii's and a lower noack.

The original Defy (now going extinct

) Pennzoil HM, Rotella, Castrol HM (guessing from the kv) and Mobil 1 HM all fall in that range in 30 grade. Many of the "Euro" type oils do too, like Castrol 0w30 for example.

QS Defy is on my short list to try ... Is QS doing away with it OR changing the formula to water down that awesome ZDDP number ?

It is showing up in a new package, and is now marked SN Resource Conserving. There is a recent long thread on here with many of us commiserating about it.

I agree... that Valvoline full synthetic HM is a great oil, but not necessary if your engine is in perfect condition.

If a person wanted a thicker oil in grade and also wanted the extra detergents, HM oil would be the ticket.

Oh not good - not having a resource conserving make up is what made Defy so well liked !!
** Just noticed your 4.0 Wrangler oil preferance KCJeep - care to expound on the ratio of 30W to MMO ?

I most likely will one day - however I just noticed a newer Rotella Syn Blend which is a 10W30 on rollback at WM ... Well , well - what do we have here ?

Yep. The "PHM" has a higher TBN than the standard PYB. Plus it's a synthetic blend for those who get turned on by that sort of thing.

I run MMO at 20% as suggested, doing some cleaning and always tinkering too (thus the SAE 30). Runs great by the way.
