Well, sounds like a job for M1 or (not sure yet) Pennzoil Platinum.
I would use synthetic, but around here, you will find as many opinions as ********

Lovely car - I would change sooner than later - get in some clean juice and enjoy that car!

and I hope your health gets better soon!

If you are worried about warranty stick to the recomendations in the owners manul as to oil viscosity. I going to guess it calls for 5W30 with 10W30 permited if 5W30 is not available. I would run M1 5W30 or 10W30 until the warranty was up if that concerns you. After the warranty is up consider 5W40. I would stick to their recomended drain interval if you run synthetic. If you decide to run Dino I would go with Havoline or Chevron Supreme in 10W30 and change it every 3000-4000 miles.

Any syn-blend by a name brand oil company. No need for full synthetic going 5K OCIs. For a store purchase, Castrol Syn-Blend, Mobil 7500 or Valvoline Durablend are all real good.

Brands are not as important the service interval.
For 5k intervals, use a dino and re-use the filter twice and the engine will be 100% good.

It's an expensive car, so why skimp out on the oil filter if you've got to get under there anyway to drain the oil?

I mean, we're talking a $5 part on a $35,000 Lexus. I agree with the dino suggestion at the short OCI, but do the filter too...like the warranty requires.

1) The IS350 is about $45,000

2) New filter is required at each oil change per Toyota.

3) Oil Filter is a cartridge unit accessed in the engine bay.

4) I'd use name-brand, OTC 5w30 @ 5000 mi intervals. Keep an eye out for Pep Boys specials as they often sell name-brand conventional oil (either Castrol GTX or Pennzoil) for < $1.50/qt on a weekly basis.

Agreed... I see no reason to change the oil if you're not changing the filter. This holds for any car, whether it's $35K or not.

Anyone have any real reasons that the filter needs changing rather than imagined ones like "skimping" or "not understanding"? ...didn't think so.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone!

JohnBrowning, you are correct in that the manual calls for 5W30 (10W30 in a pinch). I certainly will be changing the filter cartridge with each change and I already have four factory replacements sitting in the garage. Post-production market seems to be lacking in this arena, although it does appear that since ordering the Toyota parts, Purolator may now have a filter available.

Did I mention how much I enjoy this site? I eat it up.

p.s. Scott, thanks for the welcome! I really enjoy the car, although my wife hates it (she's a truck-loving lady).

You should think so, especially if you don't give us a chance to discuss it before dismissing our reasons.

But here we go...

1) His warranty will require it.

2) He'll have to spend $25 on a UOA to determine if it's okay to skimp on $5 filter changes.

3) There are virutally no posted UOA's here at BITOG utilizing that sort of oil filter scheme.

4) Oil filters are a "renewable resource" that BITOGers can change on a short OCI and not feel guilty about. Oil itself is another story.

5) Not changing your oil filter = Hoarding ketchup packets from McDonalds.

IMO, of course.

1) I said that the engine would be fine with alternating filter service and nothing of the warranty. I stand by that.

2) UOA is not applicable

3) UOAs, again?

4) More conjecture.

5) Meaningless analogy. It's an automobile manufacturer RECOMMENDED practice, FYI.

So, no real reasons to change the filter, like it reaching capacity? Exactly.

Oil service can be fully achieved by draining or an extractor in 5 minutes for $10, and you guys would have him spend top-dollar for a dealer change for no good reason.

"Your Lexus should receive scheduled maintenance every 5,000 to 7,500 miles (or every 4 to 6 months), depending on your circumstances and driving habits.

5,000-Mile Or 4-Month Intervals

Use 5,000-mile or 4-month intervals if you primarily drive your Lexus under any of the following conditions:
-Driving on unpaved or dusty roads
-Towing a trailer or using a camper or cartop carrier
-Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below freezing

7,500-Mile Or 6-Month Intervals

Use 7,500-mile or 6-month intervals if you primarily drive your Lexus under conditions less strenuous than those listed above."

I don't think he meets the "Severe" driving requirements.

His dry NM climate and his long trips would indicate minimal sludging.

Anyone still think 5000 oil /10000 filter would not leave his engine "100% fine" and have a rational reason for it?

I'm sure it will be fine, however, if you're going to the trouble of changing the oil why would you leave the used filter on there? It still contains ~1 quart of old oil. That makes no sense to me.

Car's clock is at 3500 miles and it holds the factory fill. I would have preferred to change it out a little earlier but due to health issues I've been unable to do so.

Car is used for daily commute to and from work, ~20 miles each way, and is a 50/50 mix of surface streets and freeway. I do drive the car hard from time to time so I would like to ensure the engine's health as well as the factory warranty (per the Lexus warranty information, 5000 mile oil change intervals are required).

FYI, climate in Albuquerque is dry with temps up to 100 degrees in summer and I'm open to dino or synthetic.

I've enjoyed reading the posts on this site for quite some time and I appreciate finally being able to utilize the members’ expertise for my own application.

Thanks in advance!

Why in the he!! do guys like you care about those of us "wasting our money" on changing oil filters?
Do YOU know more than the guys that designed MY engine?
No, you most certainly don't.

I can't stand how guys like you feel the need to mother everyone with YOUR beliefs.
I gave my 2¢ as did others, but you insist on banging on people for wasting a whole $4 on a filter - WHICH THE WARRANTY/MANUAL CALL FOR.

Skimp all you want on your cars, but please, for those of us with our own beliefs, spare us more of your rants.
I don't care if you never change your filter and use canola oil in your car - enjoy, partner.

Scott

Sheesh, you guys. I think you all missed the key point WRT the filter issue. JHC stated he still HAS THE FACTORY FILL in it!

Sure, I agree w/Auto Union in the sense that alot of oil filters probably get changed unnecessarily on short OCIs. And personally, I always change the filter myself.

BUT PLEASE IF YOU NEVER CHANGE THE FILTER EVER AGAIN, AT LEAST DO IT ON THE FIRST CHANGE OF THE FACTORY FILL!!!!

Scott, you must enjoy wrestling off a servicable filter for no reason. I don't.

It's funny how you say:

"you insist on banging on people for wasting a whole $4"

...and

"for those of us with our own beliefs, spare us more of your rants"

...but you don't extend to me those same principles.

Again, a contradictory post WITHOUT ANY BASIS IN FACT OR SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE.

Just "ranting" that I'm wrong and you're right is pretty juvenile. As for going "by the book", recommended oci is 7500 miles. I tend to think that my service plan would provide a slightly better result and would be easier/cheaper than going to the dealer for 5000 mi changes of drum oil and the unnecessary filter change...especially if an oil extractor is employed.

Please, before any more dumb posts, show me some pics of a 5000 miles clogged filter off a nearly-new car.
