I'll be coming up on my first oil change for my '06 Buell XB12X-Ulysses soon. Of course the dealer is suggesting rather strongly that I stay with Harley-Davidson 20W-50 oil. (dino)

I want to go with a synthetic at this time (1000 miles)so I'm thinking that M1 15W-50 (Extended performance) would be a great choice.

What is the feeling from the field on this? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

David

M1 15w-50EP is way better than HD20w-50,Reg oil or there Synthetic.
Redline 10w40 also works well in these engines.

I like the "Mobil 1 V-Twin" 20w-50 and the Amsoil 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil.
Amsoil part # MCV recently replaced part # AMV...I haven't tried the new one yet.

I use them in both the engine and primary/trans.

I think any synthetic will keep the fan from coming on half as much.

If you haven't, check out www.badweatherbikers.com
I have a 2003 XB9S

It looks like the way to go is M1 15W-50 EP. Meanwhile I forgot to ask about the trans/primary lube. Harley has something call Formula X trans lube for the redesigned Sportster trans. Stay with that or go with...?

Thanks again.

Exxon Superflo 10w-40 or 20w-50
The results on this oil in a Trans/Primary have been real good.

I use M1 15W-50 EP in my XB9S. I think you will be pleased with this oil.

I would also suggest a right side air scoop to deal with rear cylinder heat and the fan running on the U.

Good luck.

Redline 15-50w, 20-50w,and Mobile V-Twin are "cost is no object" oils designed to be used with your air cooled Buell engine. You could not go wrong! Don't believe the myth that synthetic oils don't work in roller bearing engines, I don't know who dreamed that up.Harley has started specing a different transmission oil for the new helical/hypoid gears in the transmissions. Seeing that every gear oil sold on the retail market is designed for helical gears, I don't see why you need special Harley oil for them.

BTW- the back cylinder on the Buell is up in the frame. It gets very very very hot.

Don't use DINO, it could not possibly stand up to this heat (the head gets to over 400 degrees).

Moreover, the right side scoop is a must in my opinion.

Good luck
