Oil flow into oil filter.

These days it is easy to swop between various filters and other OEM filters as some people do.If the car is used for normal commute there might not be any problems ever.However if it is a high performance engine that gets taken to the red line a lot one should keep the intake flow to the filter at least the same or better than the OEM filter.You can calculate the area of one hole and multiply by the amount of holes for the total area.Most of the time 6 large holes equates to slightly more area than 8 smaller holes and 5 large holes is quite a bit less than 8 small holes.The thicker the oil the bigger the problem will be.One can easily fit for eg. a Hyundai 26300 35503 filter on say a Honda s2000.They look exactly the same and fit perfectly but the Hyundai one only has 5 large holes compared to 6.So you might have a problem at high RPM.Don't be tempted by price or ease of getting hold of any filter without looking what you are putting onto your engine.
 
The inlet holes don't make up but a very small factor in the total flow resistance of an oil filter. An oil filter is typically 15 times more free flowing than the engine's oiling circuit. In other words, the oil filter only makes up about 1/15th of the total resistance in the oiling circuit. An engine really doesn't even know it's there if the filter media is not loaded much. Positive displacement oil pumps will put all their output flow through the filter and oiling circuit until the pump's pressure relief valve starts to open up (ie, the pumps' max pressure point is hit).
 
Inlet hole square footage is probably greater than the oil pum discharge port for just about any arrangement...non issue unless the filter is grossly deficient.
 
If the holes were a metering orifice I would think that the function of the bypass valve would be screwed up.
 
The bypass valve in the filter only cares what the delta-p is across the media.

If the inlet holes in the base of the filter were so restrictive that it actually cut down the oil flow going through the filter, then the bypass valve would never open because the very reduced flow (from the holes being super small) wouldn't cause enough delta-p across the media to make the bypass valve ever open.

That would also mean the oil pump would be in pressure relief - so those holes would have to be super restrictive. A positive displacement oil pump will force all of its output volume through the downstream flow resistance until the pump goes into pressure relief.
 
It can happen ,a while back a company released filter with seal that could end up in oil gallery if improper stuff happened .oil pressure at pump was normal but in the dash it was from 5 to 10 psi less then at the oil pump.the seal issue was fixed about 5 years later..car oil filter are more like a Donaldson so this couldn't happen
 
Thanks for all the feedback.I can see you are all very intelligent and educated.I have considered a lot of the same facts above when I wrote the topic.I have looked at various makes of filters,but what bothers me is that you may have for eg.5 or 6 holes in the same make of filter with the same baseplate entry degrees and drilling positions depending only on the specific engine.Why don't the manufacturers save on tooling and drill all their baseplates with 5 large holes and be done with,or is there something we are missing?
 
As long as the sum of the areas of the base plate holes is equal or greater than the area of the engine fitting's oil flow hole that the filter screws onto, then you have nothing to worry about.
