I never liked the can bottoming out on the engine block seat either, especially when it's aluminum. I stopped using filters with that type of base gasket for that reason.
Denso oil filters have a torque-stop feature which lets the filter bottom out on the block. Oil seal deformation is exact without guessing. No over tightening and no leakage.
Yes, at the expense of chewing up the aluminum filter seat on the engine. I've never had a base gasket seal, regardless of the design of the gasket.
