Quick question on the Ecotec cartridge filters/brand. I noticed the last Napa filter I bought came with a large o-ring. I recently bought a Purolator and it did not come with this large o-ring. Does the o-ring being included vary greatly by brand....and does it matter? Is is required that you change the o-ring each time.

I've only found the Napa and Carquest Ecotec filters to come with a replacement O-ring. I'd have to assume all Wix and rebadged will come with one. You have to buy the O-ring separately from a dealer parts counter. I haven't replaced mine yet on my 2007 at ~24Kmi.

WIX & MC cartridges come with a large & small O-Ring. This for a Mazda vehicle. I always replace the O-Rings as they don't appear to be of the Viton (live forever material).

I used a fram cartridge on a 2006 Cobalt last change. Still has the factory O-ring and it looks like new after 6 oil changes and 30,000mi. If the filter comes with the new O-ring I'll change it then. I love this GM filter design

I use a FRAM 9000 on my Hyundai engine without a problem. It looks exactly like the OEM filter, and even says "Made In Korea" on it. Both OEM and the FRAM are Quality made filters. Totally different and better than the 'canned' variety...

Ditto for some VW and Toyota applications.
The O-ring is the critical part for sealant/ leakage.
Should be replaced, lubed, and properly seated!
