Oil Filter Q?

2004 F150, Lariat, 5.4 3-Valve, 44K Miles
We are in the final clean up phase of my son's F150 engine. We will be using Mobil 1 0W40 oil. I was looking around in some misc. filters I still have left over from the donations and found a ProSelect 21372 oil filter still wrapped in plastic. Opinions on using this oil filter for the final clean up (4-5K miles) before he goes to a FRAM XG-2 and Motorcraft 5W20 oil?

2015_PSD, Did you see the oil filter l cut open after the first oil change that had been done on this truck since 2010? I have it posted on here somewhere. I am typing this on my phone and don't know how to do a search with such small letters.
 
the proselect will be fine.

i'm not a fram boy and would recommend an MC filter with the oil.


but i always hear good things about the Tough guard.

ProSelect is a decent filter, as long as you keep the OCI 5K or under you should be OK. Believe those have the combo valve, I've used them, but sometimes the ADBV function isn't the best.

Very good SN synthetic oil run at short intervals.

Hopefully you're just changing the filter then.

I searched and found it and I had commented on that post about the short tripping, but did not really realize the engine was "dirty". If it were mine and because it seems the maintenance history could be questionable and because he is a mechanic, I would pull the valve covers to determine the true condition of the engine. No need to guess when you can know for sure. With the short tripping that is happening, short OCIs are going to be necessary to prevent varnish/sludge build-up which can affect the VCT operation.

This is the 3rd OCI in the last 4K miles. I saved the last filter but have yet to cut it open. He is going to let this oil stay in for 3K miles. I will then cut the oil filter open to determine if it is any better.
He is having a Ford tech use a bore camera to check inside the oil pan and the valve covers, if the latter is possible.

You are free to look the thread up.

For having only 44k on the OD, it looked rather dirty IMO.

OK sorry I tried to find pictures but I didn't know about that thread.

So you haven't verified that the engine is "dirty" then. The filter is supposed to trap "stuff", if there was anything on an engine that was dirty then it would (and should) be the filter.

This may be a lot of worry and flapping about over absolutely nothing.

All right SMH all day, but am I missing the dirty engine pictures somewhere? The post I quoted said "For having only 44k on the OD, it looked rather dirty". What has 44k miles that looks dirty? Surely the filter doesn't have 44k miles on it, correct?

If I am missing the (dirty) engine pictures somewhere I apologize, but I can't find them.
