Oil Filter Preservation Insanity?!

I bought a case (12) of good quality Bosch filters off eBay for $3 each. Normally $10 or more. They're sitting in their boxes in the garage and that's just fine. I'll use them as I use them.

Loads of people have been messaging me wanting to know details!

@dnewton3 feel free to paste this info to into the original post.

Backstory: I inquired with the BITOG community about best practices for long-term oil filter storage and the best two recommendations seemed like
  • desiccant moisture protection
  • vacuum sealing from contaminants
I looked into these, and discovered I could inexpensively do both!

Here are the products I purchased:

Dry & Dry 5 Gram [50 Packets]... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DYKTS9C?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Vacuum Sealer Machine - Food... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5CZZX82?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Wevac Vacuum Sealer Bags 8x50... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RKRK7FD?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

And here is the full process:

Probably a bit extreme but storage space wise its probably better and less bulky than storing them in heavy military grade ammo cans that I normally store them in with large gun safe sized desiccant packs.

I have a bunch of filters (Orange Fram, Mann, Napa Gold and K&N) that have been sitting on my basement shelf for 20 years.
This thread makes me want to cut them open and see if any deterioration has occurred. I'm betting they look just like they did the day I bought them.

Agree with @Yuk . There's nothing wrong with an oil filter sitting on the shelf for years. Maybe, possibly if it sat there for 10 or more years in a climate that's extremely wet like the tropics or something . . . In a semi outdoor setting like a partially open garage or something. Even then, if it's in a cardboard container, I doubt it would be damaged because the cardboard would absorb a good bit of the moisture.

But this amounts to preparing an oil filter to survive a nuclear winter or some other massive Doomsday event. In the event something that bad happens, we're going to need water and food long long LONG before an oil filter, and we're pretty much all dead by then anyway. If I were going to prep for doomsday, I'm going to be ready to shoot raving hordes of gangs rather than desiccant-protecting my oil filters.
