They can rust internally, especially in humid environments. Not a huge issue for short term storage... but if you're storing filters for years it makes sense to take some precautions.What is wrong with simply leaving oil filters in their factory cardboard box sitting on the shelf in the garage?
Cause they are never on sale when you need them.How about buy the filters as you need them?
