Just got back from the local Meijer store with a handfull of Purolator oil filters because they were on sale (pure one 3.79) (Premium plus 1.99

Anyway I had a few Super-techs at home too. I looked at the box and the super tech said it has a 98% multi pass filtration efficency. The purolator premium plus has a 96% multi and the Pure one has a 98% multi pass. Does this mean the pure one and super tech filter the same? If so does the synthetic filter media in the pure one make enough difference to pay an extra $3? If the filtering is the same why should I spend an extra $3 for a filter for my extended OCI's?

Did they mention what test they used? particle size? oil weight or temp?

Not all filter companies test the same way.
Box labelling is meaningless and usually written by the marketing dept.

I believe the supertech box just said somthing like "tests conducted by Champion labs" something vague like that. I am not sure what tests they did.

Yes, those particular Supertech filters are supplied by Champion Labs. I think the major reason why they are not restocking is because they are such a huge good deal at 2 bucks or less.

I would hope that they are testing to ISO 4548-12 standards which would address these questions......

Unless supertech updated their product and put a better media in, they must have used a different particle size to get those efficiencies.

When I tested a bunch of these filters for pore size using bubble point values the Supertechs weren’t close to the pure one's. They were in the same ballpark as the standard Purilator but testing indicated the supertech to have a larger pore size. If you haven't already check out www.oilfilterstudy.com

The average pore size that was calculated by the testing was:

Pure One:42µm
Premimum Plus:51µm
Supertech:64µm

Just about every brand has a chart comparing them to others and with that brand on top. You can only trust them so much as they will vary tests to show the best one.

The Pure One has other advantages over the Supertech including a silicone ADBV.

Off-topic: just curious...anyone know the profit margin to WalMart from the $1.97 ST filter, or to PepBoys on the $2.97 Purolater Premium filter?
