So,

Dirty little secret. You know how you have to put oil on filter gasket before you spin it on?

Well, I do that, but..........

shhhhhhhhhh

I never have clean oil under car with me, so i dip my gloved finger into the drain pan and smear a drop of the old oil on gasket, then spin it on. Done it for years.

Shhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Don't tell anyone.

Don't show that on Youtube. The commenters there will go into attack mode!

While I think using new/fresh oil preferable, imo more important that the sealing gasket lubricated. Also, that the mounting area wiped down prior to new filter install.

I'd say not really a total heretic diy filter install move. So yeah, ok.

I've heard that the newer Mustang models do not recommend oiling the gasket because of reports of the filters backing off over time. By putting the filter on without oil on the gasket, it creates more friction and reduces the risk. Do your own research to confirm, but I thought that was an interesting progression.

I hadn't heard that one. So far on my 23, they are coming off seemingly tighter than when they were put on, which I regard as normal.

EDIT: Appears to be for the V8's.

Oh you bet I'm telling people. I know a group of people on a certain forum that would lose their minds over this.

Absolutely. I say all this joking around, it really makes no difference as long as it is lubricated. I always wipe down everything squeaky clean. Lubrication is the most important thing.

I used to fill oil filters before install, but haven't done it in a while for the same reason. I'm already under car, so dip and spin. Of course, that's another thread entirely, and there are already several I'm sure.

I’ve been changing oil since age 12 and I’ve never done that. What I have done, is to spill the individual quart of new oil under the car, that I was using to lube the gasket 😂

After all these decades of automakers successfully using spin-on oil filters on cars, why is Mustang all of a sudden having problems of backing out with their filters?

I always let the new and old filter have a second together to transfer the oil. Plus it makes sure the gaskets match.

The Toyota OE filters I use for the RAV4 come with gasket pre-lubed. A plastic shrink wrap keeps everything nice and fresh.
Mind...blown.
The only filter I hate is on the (beloved here) Lexus - put the dang cartridges on top - even Mopar figured that out …
