I just bought a spin-on filter for my home oil burner. Its about the size of the PH8 standard filter. They recommend removing the gasket and oiling BOTH sides of the gasket. Has anyone ever considered doing that for car oil filters?

Nope, never had one leak just oiling one side, I don't see any benefit to oiling both sides. In fact I think there might be a chance at creating a problem by oiling both sides for an automotive application. JMO

In most vehicles enough oil is on the mounting boss to lube the gasket. But oiling both sides would not by itself create a leak in a properly tightened installation. A DRY gasket can bunch up or twist and cause a leak though.

Nope, just the side of the gasket that touches the engine block....
