Oil filter brand differences, Honda Pilot.

There are more brands out there, but these are all I could find at my local auto parts stores.

The OEM Honda (Filtech) and Wix filters were used. The V6607 is from the Valucraft line. The Motorcraft FL2007 says made in Japan, the FL-821 has a second ADBV in the core? The Fram XG7317 has a screen between the core and media. I've tried to state the not so obvious differences evident in the pics. I can't measure filtering effectiveness but at least we can see the general construction quality and similarities.

Wow. Neato pictures. Lots of work. My Ody takes the same filters...at least the Fram TG has a chunk guard when it goes into BP.

I don't follow you on this "FL-821 has a second ADBV"???

The M1, K&N, AC DElco, and Supertech appear to be identical to me.

Hard to see inside the core (note to self... cut it open take more pics) but there is a valve in there that is not a bypass valve. Look inside the Microgard and Bosch filters, you can see the top of the Purolator style bypass valve, which the FL-821 also has but you can't see it because its below what I think is another ADBV...

Yes except the filter media is darker on M1 and K&N, so it could be different media or is it just a different batch?

The M1 and K&N, also have the thickest/strongest enclosures, I have not measured them but they are harder to try and collapse by hand.

I think it's a well built filter and the media is supposed to be synthetic, but I can't find the micron rating for it.

After a quick hack job with the wife's Ginsu... uh oh here she comes, gotta put it back!

The bottom of the filter with the bypass valve is on the left in both pics, and you can see the other valve in the top half...

Yeah, too bad my Honda dealer doesn't have any more...

But the visual appearance tells us "nothing" about filtering effectiveness! Since I don't have an oil filter test lab and "truth in advertising" is what it is, my best option is Used Oil Analysis!

With that said, I've decided I'm going to FRAM IT! (with an XG7317) Before I SLAM IT! My next couple of UOA's (which I'll post for all to see) will tell the story.

I'm coming up on my 18000m OCI, so I'll submit a 3000m and 6000m UOA with the XG7317 and let UOA be my guide... If I don't like the results, I'm thinking the Amsoil EOA13 will get the next shot.

The Wix guts (less the media) should be the same as the EaO.

My local AutoZone sells them alongside the STP brand (which I've not dissected, but looks the exactly same) for about $2.50.

If you want to use an 'oversized' oil filter, you might still find the Purolator L-24458 at SEARS.

Ok, I found out that the "other" valve in the FL-821 is an anti-siphon valve used primarily in turbo applications.

In other news, I've received my EaO13 filters and after sacrificing one, I can report that as Pablo said "The Wix guts (less the media) should be the same as the EaO" and they are including the Wix bypass valve that I prefer. So what's not to like? Well the preferred customer price is twice the Wix price, but I find that acceptable if it filters better and you can use it for twice the mileage.

It bothers me that some manufacturers pay no attention to pleat spacing. Look at most of the Champ lab sourced filters above and you see pleat spacing varying by a factor of three or more to one inside a filter. That looks like sloppy mfg. to me. Look at how even the Filtech is, or even the much maligned Frams. That Fram XG looks like a well constructed unit. The later Purolator picture is also a nice example of even pleats.

Does pleat evenness matter? I don't know, but the Japanese principle is that when a company doesn't care about visual quality there is a good chance they don't care about non-visible quality factors as well.
