Oil consumption; why some, not others?

The tech at the Acura dealer drives an Integra Type R and he is the one who told me about the hot VTEC solenoid burning a bit of oil when it engages. I'm not quite so sure about the oil squirters causing more burning in themselves. The dealer says those squirters move more oil at high rpm's. In my case I think my rings and valve guides are faulty due to the age of the car: lots of blowby: rings passing air/fuel mixture during the compression stroke, cloud of smoke on startup: excessive clearances at the tops of the valve guides.

You might have piston rings which pass oil, I understand Honda engines which have the anti-wear material on the cylinder walls cause fairly loose seal some of the time (don't know if your engine is one of them)

I do notice with my car, that it throws oil everywhere, including into the intake manifold through the PCV system. My worn rings are probably causing this.

If these points are true (that the VTEC solenoids cause oil vaporization and that oil squirters cause burning) then that could explain some of the oil burning I'm seeing in my 07 Civic. The R18 engine's VTEC implementation can cause the engine to switch cam profiles fairly often in certain driving styles, as it's influenced by more than just engine speed.

Do you have any sources for this assertion?

My Buick seems not to like the taste of Pennzoil Platinum. No, really; I had to add almost a quart over 5000 miles on the first PP OCI, and now, 2500 miles into the second, I've had to add a pint. That said, my previous changes with this car were all 2500 miles or 3000 miles during my Auto-Rx treatment. These with the PP are the first 5K OCIs I've done.

I'm going back to dino, Castrol GTX, in April and we'll see how that goes.

Regarding one oil brand vs. another I give it a try and guess brand A is used and creates some deposits/false seals and later brand B and its slightly different chemisrty will then clean off and then after a while start to creat it's own new deposits and comsumption should go down. Even if you always used the same brand all of engines life that doesn't mean the oil has actually been the same all those years. Oil is made in batches, (I think) and will vary some, so may almost act like another oil brand. Has anyone had a vehicle a real long time and only used 1 weight and brand and notice any difference with formula changes from SH to SJ, SL, or SM?
