Oil consumption stays the same with different oil viscosity

Hi all,

I have an older 1996 Diesel Toyota Hilux it has an 2.4 non turbo IDI engine. Has about 310,000 miles on it.
Oil and filter are changed every 6,000 miles, I know it an older car but it consumes about 3 quarts of oil between OCI, it is like that regardless of which oil I have used 10w40,15w40,20w50, different brands, high millage, old spec, new spec etc...
No leaks and I am trying to understand if one can come to a conclusion of what it the source of the oil consumption?
I understand that it is probably not the valve stems seals since its a diesel and has no vacuum to draw the oil into the combustion chamber?

Engine starts and runs great , no smoke at all.

Thanks!

A quart every 2k miles isn't terrible for a vehicle with over 300,000 miles on it. With that many miles I would suspect some engine wear, perhaps the valve seals are contributing a bit, although not as bad as in a gas engine.

They would use 1 or 2 litres in 10,000km, 3 is a little more, but high miles it could use more. With no turbo you'll be wringing the poor old 2L's neck everywhere.

If it runs fine just run a cheap 15W-40 Diesel oil and top it up as necessary

How did you get that thing here? Sounds like an awesome truck.

1 quart every 2000 miles isn't that much IMO. 310k on that engine doesn't seem like a lot either..

I realize it's not the same thing, but my neighbor had a Datsun diesel engine in his S10. The engine was on it's 4th "host" and was pushing 500k with original everything before his health starting going as well as other wear and tear items on the truck. (He parked it and bought a low mileage Sonoma.) I think oil consumption was the least of his concerns.

Just check it and drive.

I would treat the engine oil as a consumable just like DEF fluid gets used up in a new diesel, except your adding Delvac or Rotellla is cheaper than DEF, and the oil has an unlimited shelf life.

That looks like broken valve seals if there is no leakage and consume regularly a lot of oil.
So at least is top overhaul to change valve seals, but of course to have a piece of mind will need all piston ring to be replaced as well.

I would consider getting an opinion from a local independent diesel shop. If all else is OK with the truck, an “in frame” rebuild would tighten everything up and might get you another 300K out of it. The fuel mileage on those little diesels is crazy good.

Thank you all! It is a great SLOW truck but I like it, will probably just keep adding oil until and if I decide to rebuild the engine .

Hint: I am not from the states

You could put some atf in cylinders and let it sit for 2 days. Then turn if over for 30 sec with glow plugs out. Put them back in change oil and see if it improves if that doesn't help you might as well run it till you need to do rebuild.

Brake fluid is also sometimes suggested for this (as well as various specially made potions). Haven't tried any of them, but brake fluid seems to make sense, since I have found it to be a pretty good carb cleaner.

ATF is just thinnish oil, no?

I agree valve stem seals , and would be hard with the mileage

Different viscosity should change if it was rings

Valve stem seals can be changed without pulling the head

No, it's just going out the breather hose. There is no PCV, just a hose from the rocker cover to the intake hose. Pull the intake hose off, it'll be oily.

It is oily, so if I understand you and that is the case , oily residue around the breather hose in the inlet manifold indicates valve seals?

No, the seals will just go into the cyl. I had a '95 Hi Lux in today...I did a service and hanger bearing. Here is the intake, not too bad - it's mainly a farm vehicle and only does about 5,000km a year.
