'92 BMW 325i, 120,000 miles

1 quart of 15W-40 Delo in 6000 miles

'80 Cessna 152, Lycoming 0-235 engine, 1100 hours

1 quart SAE 50 Aeroshell in 10 hours

1998 3.4L Pontiac Transport 5W30 Mobil 1 = no consumption

1997 5.4L Ford F-150 5W30 Mobil 1 = 1/4 qt per 4000 miles.

I have 6,200 miles on Amsoil ASL and have gone through 2qts. Not to bad but I'd like to lower that. Might be time for a 15w-40 wt as Jelly stated. Suprisingly, Amsoil S2k and M1 10w-30 were a tad better then the ASL.

All motors will use a little bit of oil. It would be impossible to have the rings work if a tiny film of oil didn't stay behind. The crosshatching on the cylinder wall or liner and the type of compression and oil control rings used will have a major impact on oil consumption.

1984 Ford F-150 302 V8 528,000km / +300,000 miles owned from new. Ran Delvac 1 5W-40 after initial 5,000km / 3,000mi break in. Best was 1 qt every 10,000km / 6,250mi. Now about 1 qt every 6,500km / 3,800mi. Compression still good.

2000 GMC Sierra Vortec 5.3 V8 62,000 km / 37,000mi owned from new. Mobil 1 0W-30 winter, Mobil 1 10W-30 summer: switched to Mobil 1 after 1,800km break in. 1 quart every 7,500km / 4,500mi on M1 0W-30, 1 quart every 10,500km / 6,800mi on M1 10W-30.

Will switch to Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 this summer to see what, if any, effect it has on oil consumption and fuel economy. If no fuel economy penalty, but lower oil consumption as expected, will use Delvac 1 5W-40 instead.

Jimbo:

1 qt / 10 hours isn't too bad for that 0-235. Have you tried Exxon Aviation Oil Elite 20W-50?? Seems to help the consumption a bit and also better for cool temps.

The last car I owned which used oil, was a POS 87 Ford Escort. The worst oil consumption was 1 qt/1000 miles with formula shell 5w30. The best was with SJ valvoline maxlife 5w30......1/2 quart in 3000 miles.

'96 Cherokee filled with 10w40 Chevron supreme and 1 quart of 10w30 Havoline synthetic. Nearly 200,000 miles and the biggest oil consumption is from me checking the dip stick ever hour or so.

1999 S-10 4.3- 10W30 Mobil 1- 1/4qt per 5,000

2003 Honda Civic- Pennzoil 5W20, uses no oil

Wifes 1999 Isuzu Amigo- 3.2L- Pennzoil 10W30, uses 1-1 1/2 qts in 3,000

Bolens riding tractor- Pep Boys Sae 40 uses 1 pint every half hour of running!

Why did you switch??

This is an experiment. Dr T seems to have good luck with Syntec in a BMW and BMW uses Castrol as factory fill lubricants.

I wanted to try an ACEA A3 syntetic for an extended drain interval with UOA to verify how well the oil held up. There is also the promise of greater fuel mileage, easier cold starting, etc. with synthetics to test.

After 1800 miles my average fuel economy is identical and oil usage is one pint. The engine does not sound or perform any different. I will probably go back to Delo next oil change.

Jimbo, is this the Syntec Blend 10-40? Have you had other consumption issues with other grades/brands? Maybe there's some cleaning and then it will stabilize....switching brands often causes a temporary 'spike' in consumption which then levels off.

BMW 5-40 Synthetic .5 qts. over 9-10k mi. intervals.
BMW 5-30 Synthetic 1 qt. over 9-10k mi. intervals increasing with OCI's up to 2.5 after 60k mi..
Most consumption with A1 5-30's eg. Valvoline and M-1. Also, all grades of M-1..including 5-30, 0-40 and the 15-50. Consumption seems to be concurrent with number/frequency of cold starts.
Delvac 1 and Havoline 5-40...1 qt. over 4k mi.
Least with Syntec 5-50...1 qt. over 5k mi.
Castrol TWS 10-60...also about 1 qt. over 4k. mi.

Currently, BMW 0W-40 LL-01 (Germany) - we'll see...

I went thru about 2.5L of M1 5w30 SS in 5000k in my RSX Type S (with some hard driving).

Looks like M1 is semi-popular for burning. I think I might try something thicker with a lower Noack like Amsoil next time.

It is not the blend but the Tide-perfumed Syntec. This car has had only 15W-40 Delo for the 60,000 miles that I have owned it. Service records show that it previously got 15W-40 Kendall.
