All motors will use a little bit of oil. It would be impossible to have the rings work if a tiny film of oil didn't stay behind. The crosshatching on the cylinder wall or liner and the type of compression and oil control rings used will have a major impact on oil consumption.
1984 Ford F-150 302 V8 528,000km / +300,000 miles owned from new. Ran Delvac 1 5W-40 after initial 5,000km / 3,000mi break in. Best was 1 qt every 10,000km / 6,250mi. Now about 1 qt every 6,500km / 3,800mi. Compression still good.
2000 GMC Sierra Vortec 5.3 V8 62,000 km / 37,000mi owned from new. Mobil 1 0W-30 winter, Mobil 1 10W-30 summer: switched to Mobil 1 after 1,800km break in. 1 quart every 7,500km / 4,500mi on M1 0W-30, 1 quart every 10,500km / 6,800mi on M1 10W-30.
Will switch to Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 this summer to see what, if any, effect it has on oil consumption and fuel economy. If no fuel economy penalty, but lower oil consumption as expected, will use Delvac 1 5W-40 instead.
