Oil consumption epidemic

My 2011 Forester FB engine with 22k miles is burning 1 quart every 3k miles. This is the first car I have ever had that needed oil before oil changes. I am very dissapointed with this issue.

Was on cars.com the other night, found three 2010 Prii with 120-130k miles. Out of curiosity, I checked the service history on all 3. Two out of the 3 had a dealership visit right before they were traded in, and it was for oil consumption. One was consuming 1 qt every 1000, the other was consuming two quarts every 1k according to the customer. One had documented 10-12k oil changes with Toyota 0w20. Hmm....

i think Eddie has a good point. my idea is pore quality rings. i have some engine history. it took the U.S. car makers years to solve troubles like this.

I agree....the last 8 cars our family has had have never comsumed even 1 quart of oil in an OCI. But I always do a 5000 mile OCI. Extended oil intervals are a very bad idea in my book. You aren't saving anything when you wear out you engine early or create an oil burner. Once you have an oil burner you have defeated the purpose of a low emission vehicle.

Neither of our cars burn oil. We did get on them pretty well during the break-in period, though.

I changed the factory fill on both cars at about the 1k mile range just to get the break-in wear out of there, and because it gave me the warm fuzzies.

our prius consumes up to 1/2 qt every 3,000 miles... it depends on what oil is used. mobil 1 has no consumption at 3500 mi, qsud had about a half inch on the dipstick missing @ 3k.

our hyundai just now has lowered a tiny bit, like 1/4" from full after 3300 on max life syn.

12,000 miles was clearly too long BTW. But I always believed that there was a trade off between fuel efficiency and wear protection. I decided to go to 5W30 when warranty expires in my prius. Same with the transaxle oil, WS ATF that shears down to 4.7 cSt is too much for my taste. Especially in my hot climate.

All of the Prius 0w20 UOAs that I've seen show the oil to have plenty of life left at 10k - so I seriously doubt that going an extra 2k would cause any long-term harm.

I too, may go with 5w30 once my warranty expires in a few months. I'm at 53k right now. I recently took a trip to Southern Ca and the engine was working extremely hard over the hills (4k+rpm, it seemed) and I did burn thru a little bit of oil during the first 1k of the trip, but the oil level has remained steady ever since.

You're right, 12,000 miles didn't exactly kill the rings, but who knows if that contributed to fouling them some.

On the other hand, 120,000 miles in 2-3 years is a lot of driving. Possibly high speed hwy driving. Even Toyota warns that 0W20 is not good enough for high speed driving in hot climate.
