On my 70 Challenger I changed the oil in July with Napa synethic 15w 50 and have put about 375 miles on it since. Its time for winter storage. Is it okay to just change the filter and replace the one quart?

On my 74 Cuda I changed the oil in mid October when it came out of a 3 year storage. Drove it about 400 miles. It has conventional 10w40 oil in it. Is it okay to just change the filter etc?

Nice taste in cars! I would play it safe and change the oil but I tend to be a little OCD-ish when it comes to changing the oil. Personally, the only thing I do when starting it up after a year or so is crank it with the ECM unplugged until it gets pressure. My regular OCI is ~500 miles on the GN even when it doesn't sit for long periods of time.

I'd think you'd actually be better of changing the oil and not the filter instead of the other way around.

Actually, I drive my classic cars atleast once per month year round to keep them excercised because I think it's better than just storing them for months on end w/o use. I think I must have the only non-leaking Grand National out there because the seals are never given the change to dry out. Just my opinion here, so don't treat it as gospel for sure!

its snowing here as i type this, no way is driving them until late march early april going to happen.

Maybe i need to re-phrase it, i changed the oil on the CUda when it came out of storage and then have drove it 400 miles.

It depends on whether you got your engine up to full operating temp on each trip. I just changed my oil on my 70 Camaro after 3 years and about 900 miles, no other filter changes. Sent some off to Blackstone and there were no problems with the analysis.

And it's people like you that ruin all the old good Oldsmobiles. Just my opinion. I may overdo my oil changes, but your just being cheap no question about it. Luckily you weren't the last person that owned my 350 Olds before I got it from the junkyard, it had lots of oil changes and no sludge at all in the engine when we pulled the intake.

oil changes on classic cars

Only valid if done with metal lid cans (all metal preferred, but cardboard/metal composites are acceptable - or if glass bottle with metal funnel top is used from bulk stocks) using a piercing spout.

I have never remembered this until you mentioned it. I remember my dad using QuakerState with the weird can piercing funnel when I was a kid.

I think you do have the only non-leaking GN ever lol. I've heard of them leaving drops on the showroom floor. Don't know why Buick used the rope style seals for so long. My new motor surprsingly doesn't leak from the rear main (neoprene) or the girdle, but my new valvecovers weep and somehow make it to the crossover pipe where it smokes once in a while. It never smokes when I'm alone, only when people are looking at the car.
