'95 Mitsubishi Galant with a little over 140,000 miles on a 2.4 L engine. Consumes about 1 quart every 1,000 miles (according to the manufacturer-a perfectly normal symptom

). The question is this: should I even bother changing the oil, or should I just change the filter every 3,000 miles or so?

Bumpin' up your post count?

Seriously, I was using about a quart every 1,500 miles when I started with my truck.

Best results so far after trying many different oils has been with Pennzoil High-Mileage 10w-40, which brought consumption down to a little less than a quart every 3,000.

What oil are you using now?

You must change your oil. When the oil burns it usually doesn't take the contaminents with it. You'll end up with one sludged up engine.

Yep, change the oil, maybe even sooner if it's a burner and I agree with Jelly to try the Pennzoil High Mileage to reduce the consumption.

Russ , you must change your oil regardless of consumption. you are able to stretch your interval abit because of that consumption if you keep it topped off. Jelly is right about the PENN. High Mileage oil. it can help cut your use.

Post count?

I've had this car since 108,000 miles and have been changing oil every 3,000 miles (for about 6 month that came out to be once a month). It doesn't smoke, and I have fixed most of the minor external leaks I could find.
I've used MaxLife 10W30 (calls for 5W30, but 10W30 is OK per manual). Recently switched to Mobil Drive Clean Plus 10W30. I thought about going with 10W40, or maybe even Rotella Synth. 5W40, but I don't know if that would be the equivalent of pouring perfume on a pig. Latest and greatest idea was to use TropArctic 5W30 (I figured the oil is going to disappear anyway, so might as well try a reasonably priced quality dino, instead of literally blowing overpriced High Mileage oil out of tailpipe).

Please don't hate me, but I'm prejudiced against Pennzoil.

Get over it!

Have you noticed any external leakage?

I used MaxLife 10w30 when I first got my truck, and it didn't reduce consumption much at all...the 15w40 HDEO's did a much better job in comparison.

As long as it doesn't get too cold where you're at, I'd recommend the Pennz. HM 10w-40.

A five quart jug of it (your car has a 4.6 quart capacity, correct?) with a SuperTech filter shouldn't cost too much...

Russ, I'm old and I lost an engine to sludge long ago. The Pennzoil stories are bogus and have no credibility as far as I'm concerned.

I have had Valvoline and Drive Clean to mysteriously disappear in some cars.

Try the Pennzoil or Castrol High Mileage.

Forget about the urban legends.

hey russ

I have a 92 Mitsubishi mirage 1.5L with 121k miles. bought the car six years ago at 63k miles. I thought I had serious oil consumption issues. adding 2 quarts every 3k miles. there were no leaks on the ground. A month and 500 miles ago, I checked out my valve cover gasket. the bolts were loose and when I went to take it off, it slipped off with no problem. there was no silicon holding the gasket to the engine. no wonder I was losing so much oil. now, I'm not losing any oil on the dipstick.

I did have a slight leak around the valvecover gasket, but the valvecover had to come off with the help of a prybar and a small hammer. There was also a leak around the distributor o-ring. However, those issues were taken care of, and I don't see any other leaks.
As for 10W40 oil, does brand matter? And does it have to be a High Mileage oil?

I can't believe what I am reading!

All these posts and no one is recommending an AutoRX cleaning!

Looks like a perfect candidate to me.

How about this number: 5 qts of TropArctic 10W-40, and top up with Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W-40? Or 4 qts of 10W-40 + 1 qt of 5W-40? Or go with Rotella Syns. 5W-40? In the summertime I'd go straight for 15w40, but with the winter coming (a mild one - K.C. area), what would be the best course of action?
Thanks.
