I mowed my lawn for the last time this season late this afternoon and then changed my oil. It's a B&S 18 hp Intek and I used some older 10w30 PAO synthetic and an AA 3614 filter. After I added almost the full qt. of oil I started the engine and ran it for less than a minute to circulate the fresh oil and fill the filter. When I checked the level it was about 1/2" BELOW the ADD mark (about 12 oz. low). Would running it for less than a minute (with no load) cause any damage? I was rushing because it was getting dark and I confused the capacity with my snow blower.

Does the oil 'slinger' still sling when the capacity is lower?

Nothing to worry about... Running it like that for 10 minutes or more would cause some damage as the heat built up in the engine.

Don't worry, nothing bad happened.you had enough oil to prevent damage.
You say "fill the filter" i don't know much about these engines but i think it may have a oil pump and full pressure lubrication. It may also have a automatic low oil shut down.
Check the owners manual.

My CC takes 2 quarts, and when I first changed the oil I fired it up with just one quart! Then I checked the oil and was like; UH I think it holds more than one quart!
