In light of the recent threads which slammed dealers and quick lubes for being corrupt businesses, I have a good story to tell to balance things out.

I have been driving my friend's '09 Fit for the last few days, and noticed that it has been ~5k since its last oil change. Even though the OLM showed 60% left, I decided to give it an oil change and swirl-o-matic wash before returning it as my token of appreciation.

I showed up at the dealer this morning at 7am, right as they opened. Without an appointment, they took me in and gave me the $19.95 oil change special I requested. They also asked me when the ATF, cabin filter, engine filter and brake fluid were last replaced since they had no prior maintenance history on the car, which is a good practice since many people are not familiar with the maintenance requirements of their car. I told the SA when I last did those items, and she seemed satisfied with the answers and did not try to upsell any services.

I left at 8:30am with 4qt of Genuine Honda 5w-20 bulk, new Genuine Honda filter (not an aftermarket filter, Nissan dealer), new crush washer (which most indy shops do not replace) and a clean car. Paid $23 out-the-door and was not given the upsell for more services upon picking up the car, either. I also purchased a set of front wiper inserts for a discounted price of $11 and the parts guy arranged to have the lube tech installed them for free.

That's how every service visit should go (not necessarily at this low price), IMO, as far as doing the job right the first time and without causing frustration. I just wished that every person got treated that way and it is unfortunate that some business do not treat their customers well and we keep hearing these nightmare stories on BITOG.

Now I understand why some people pay outrageous prices at Lexus and BMW dealers, because even though their prices are high, they treat their customers well and do the job right. It is simply disappointing that many BITOGers here have such a negative opinion of dealers (though some are clearly warranted), as not all dealers are bad and most of the ones that I have been to are actually pretty good-- and better trained and more familiar with the cars they service than an independent shop.

Glad to hear that there are still dealers out there that are honest and awesome...and there are people who return something to their friends better off then when they borrowed it!

Thanks for the encouragement!

IMO, In my community the Lexus dealer treats customers better than the the BMW dealer. That said, I think you are better off (cost wise) with a quality independent speciality shop as your vehicle gets older, especially Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Lexus. One reason is the dealer techs are often young and trained on newer vehicles and know very little about say, a 16 year old BMW.

I bet that there are thousands of cases like yours, but the fact is that you will never hear of them. People usually voice their opinion when something bad happens, either to warn others or just to vent.

I don't think that BITOG members have some sort of beef with dealers, but being car enthusiasts we are just harder to please and are more likely to spot dealer mistakes. Also knowing your car’s maintenance history, we can easily spot an unneeded service.

Your post seems a paradox to me. You praise this dealer oc while linking to one that didn't meet your expectation. You say you understand why folks pay "outrageous prices at Lexus and BMW dealers," yet say it's disappointing "that many Bitogers have a negative opinion of dealers."

Like many things it's dealer specific, and depending on the tech, sometimes visit specific. IMO, the bigger point is, the uncertainty, inconsistency and cost of dealer oc is why many here simply prefer DIY oil change.

Glad you found a dealer that met your expectations,...this time.

I've owned Honda, Toyota, VW, Subaru, Ford, and Jeep products since I have lived in Wausau. Six different dealers and I have never had bad service from any of them. Maybe it is some kind of work ethic thing depending on what part of the country you live in.

Well, with too many years on this planet I have yet to have a decent honest dealer and those have been Buick, Mitsubishi, Couple of different Ford dealers, Toyota, Nissan and Isuzu. Guess I just expect too much, good work at a reasonable price without upsell. I have not found that as yet at any of the ones noted above.

I rarely have anybody work on anything of mine, in fact, I recently installed my furnace including ductwork. I have had dealers do oil changes two times. One while my wife's Accord was under warranty and had an oil leak. They used flourescent dye in the oil to find the leak, and claimed the oil was left from an oil change. I asked for an oil change during the same service, but I wasn't sure they did it based on how dirty the oil looked, so I changed it myself anyway. They eventually installed a new rear main seal, which I knew was bad the whole time. I bought a new Chevy truck and they gave me 3 free oil changes when during a customer phone survey, I told them the guy who wrote the deal was rude when I declined extended warranty. After the oil change I wondered if they checked all lube points on my 4wd truck. They didn't check them, and when I did I noticed oil dripping from the engine drain plug. It was finger tight. No bashing, just my experience. I have unused free changes still available.

Also, the engine is now much, much quieter. Doesn't have the clatter that it used to, especially during cold startups.

Next time someone has an experience like this can they please let customer service know?

It will help the person who did his job well.

Interesting, some HVAC companies will not warranty products if not installed by a professional company. They don't usually care if they muck up the install but they want to see a company did it not DIY.

Did you just replace with the same BTU output? That practice is pretty frowned apon but even professionals still do it. The right way is to a Manual J heat-load calculation. For ducting you do a Manual D to get the proper sizes per room. A lot of times you find out a smaller BTU output unit will work better than over-sizing the install.

I haven't had many negative experiences with dealers except the drain plug incident at VW. They stripped it and blamed it on the aftermarket BRASS plug I had because we all know brass is much harder than Aluminum.

Will do, if Honda calls with a survey.

so you got what you paid for without being taken for a ride, and it is supposed to be a happy moment? it should be situation normal!

We have a friend wo works in sales at a VW dealership in another province. The service department there is good, and I actually trusted them to do work when we had our VW. Fair pricing, and work done well and correctly. A rarity among dealerships, especially a VW one.

I know that this should be situation normal. Unfortunately, it seems it is not, as good dealerships seem far and few between for any make.
