oil change debacle from indy shop

Here we go, a '16 Santa Fe (2.0?) with 62k on the clock. Sister drove it up from West Palm Beach to Myrtle Beach. A former Enterprise RAC. Bought it with 19k on the odo. Parked it in the driveway and I noticed a silver dollar size dollop of oil on the ground. I look up through the splash pan access hole and see an oil drop on the filter. She mentioned that she had had and oil change recently at her trusted indy shop in WPB but "her guy" had left the shop for another.
The filter, a NAPA Proformer 21358MP twisted off with little hand effort .........you see where this is going now? I changed it out with an appropriate Super Tech and 20w ST top off. How dirty did this filter do that Hyundai?

Did you check the oil level after you swapped out the filter? Probably fine once you topped it off.

Um, because the filter is for Nissan, Infinity and Mazda applications.

Some quick oil change places use the same filters. I know the Nissan Frontier (some years anyway) use the Supertech 9688, which is the same filter for Hyundai / Kia applications. However, I think for your sisters car it shoud have been a 21334 filter.

Was it off because of model number or something physical such as thread pitch / gasket diameter.
Many lube places only stock a few "good enough" filters.

The hyundai should take a 9688 fram?


The napa filter seems to generally be the same in thread pitch and gasket size.

I would say probably fine, but that depends on how much oil you had to add.

Had a similar situation happen with my old Malibu - the Chevy *dealer* didn't tighten the oil filter properly, and it was the correct filter for the engine.

Before anyone says anything, the car was worked on due to the 3.1L's infamous Lower Intake Manifold problem, and they changed the oil as a precaution. I've never had a filter that I installed come loose. Ever.

The "proper" filter per the Wix site is a 1334 / 51334.

The 1358 is only a tad slightly smaller, but has the same thread pitch, a slightly lower BP, and the exact same gasket size.

While not the "spec'd" filter for the Hyundai, it certainly wasn't the reason for the leak. And the filter, itself, didn't cause any harm.
Improper installation was the cause of the leak; probably didn't get properly tightened.

I use the 6607 or 7317 filters on 9688 applications all the time; tightening the filter would have sufficed.

Once I found a pal's filter and drain plug merely "touched" into place.
...by that I mean <1/16 of a turn after contact. I shuddered in horror.
I suppose some very uninvolved 'mechanic' was thrown on his vehicle.

I'm sitting at my computer terminal in a Napa Auto Parts looking at both filters side by side.
The thread pitch and sealing surfaces are the same on both filters. The 21358 is considerably smaller in diameter but this is not what caused your leak. Perhaps it wasn't tightened properly???
As long as a "great deal" of oil didn't leak out and starve the engine of oil, you're fine. I've had people come into the store asking me to check oil level only to find they were 4 quarts low on a 6 quart pan and the car was cruising along.
