Oil capacity?

I brought my 2012 5.0 liter to Walmart this morning to have the oil changed and tires rotated. I know, I know, but I couldn't get an appt at dealership and I go back to work tomorrow.

I opt to have my oil changed at an establishment rather then do it myself while the truck is under warranty.

Anyway, I watched them change it, authorized the use of a Purolator filter being that they didn't have the FL500s in stock, and dump 7 quarts of Motorcraft oil in. I asked about it and the tech told me that their computer pulled up a 5.4 liter engine that specified 7 quarts when he scanned the VIN. I showed him the owners manual where it says 7.7 quarts for the 5.0 and he added another half quart to being it up to full.

What's curious is that I looked at all my dealer service receipts when I got home and every one of them lists 5.4 liter and 7 quarts of oil. Did something change in the manual I'm not aware of? I am almost certain that the 5.4 wasn't even offered in 2012. Any ideas? Should I police the dealer now too?

The level at Wal Mart read halfway between the two holes on the dipstick before he added the othe half quart. I checked the oil after being services at the dealer and it was always full. Maybe the dealer caught the misinformation on the computer and now compensates?

I sure hope anyone would after starting the engine to fill the filter would turn off the engine and check the dipstick despite (or confirm) what the computer or his metering equipment said.

While incorrect/inaccurate dipsticks have popped up over time they are mighty rare.

Did you happen to check the oil prior to talking to the tech? Your original post isn't real clear. How is the oil level now? Right on the full line or over/under?

I'm thinking maybe they compensate for residual oil that is left behind, because you'll never get every ounce of oil out.

I probably just caused you to have more questions, but those are just some thoughts about it.

It is now right at the full line. Before the extra 1/2 quart of oil was added it was halfway between the full and add lines.

And yes...the 5.4 was not offered after 2011 model year if I'm not mistaken.

They still use the 5.4L 3v in the Expedition and Navigator, those take 7.0 quarts. The 5.0 in the F150 takes 7.7 quarts and the Mustang takes 8.0 quarts. Either vehicle gets 8.0 billed out on our system because we cannot bill out partial quarts.

Hello, I hate to sound like a psychologist (because I'm not) but, in answer to your question, YES, you should police your dealership too. An oil change isn't the sort of thing which activates anyone's brain cells; unless they're a BITOGer. Changing oil is "beneath" everyone and the sociology of a garage is sub-high school. Kira

Once had a Buick that took more oil than the OM said. Had dealer check and found that the OM was for a steel oil pan and I had an aluminum pan (GM changed it) which was larger.

Sometimes the guy who copies the VIN and other info makes an error.

One time I had an oil change on a 1980s Nissan 300ZX. The filter specified was the equivalent of an ACdelco PF47. It screwed on properly, but once the engine was started, the filter was blown off the engine.

I re-examined the paper that the service writer printed. Someone accidentally registered it as a Pontiac Firefly.

I had to consult the manual from the filter manufacturer to get the correct filter. It was definitely not the equivalent of an ACdelco PF47.

Very possible. But he didn't copy it, he scanned barcode on the sticker on the door. Considering that the dealership where the truck was purchased and who also does the majority of service has the same "glitch" in their computer I have to wonder whose mistake it is. I only caught this because I watched to make sure Motorcraft was being used and not their bulk oil and asked after I saw he only dumped 2 single quarts and a 5 quart jug in. I know the manual states 7.7 quarts so I asked and he told me about the computer program they use that uses the info from the scanned barcode to provide filter numbers, capacities etc.
