Hey guys! I have a turbo B18C1 DOHC VTEC integra and I've always wondered what is the best to run on this kind of setup.

The engine is bone stock. Factory recommendation is 5w-30 but I live in Alabama where temps get well over 95. 5w-30 Castrol GTX seemed to be thinning out so I went up to 10w40.

Is this safe or should I go back to manufacturer's specifications?

Other question, would you recommend synthetic or conventional for this type of setup?

What motor oil (synthetic/conventional) have the best shear rating and wear protection?

I have been looking at Valvoline Synpower, Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic, and Castrol Edge. (I've ran conventional Castrol GTX since I first got the car)

What's the best oil filter to use for this application? I've been running K&N Wrench off premium filters since day 1.

Best oil filter is easy Fram Ultra. 99%+ efficient at 20 microns vs the K&N which is about 85% efficient at 20 microns. Plus the Fram Ultra is dual layered wire backed full synthetic microglass media while the K&N is only oil impregnated cellulose at best.

Also Fram states that the Ultra is 80% @5 microns which is very good!

Fram Ultras are also rated for 15,000 miles with up to 32 grams of contamination holding capacity, the industries highest.

For oil I would use Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 which has a boosted level of anti wear additives plus the heat resistant synthetic base oils. Another alternative would be Mobil 1 0W40 European Formula. Both are top choices.

With a turbo heating up and churning the oil, I'd run nothing less than a 40 weight down south. M1 0W40 or some good syn 5W40 would be perfect for you. I have a built, sleeved, 12.5:1 ITR motor in my Civic Hatch with BC Spec IV cams turning 9500rpm regularly and it shears some 30 weight fast! I use a mech oil pressure gauge and watch it closely, you can see the oil pressure drop off when it gets hot and gets a few miles on it. In the summer I use 5W50 and it seems to do well for me.

Good job going thicker. Anyone of those products you mentioned are good. Redline is a great choice bit cost a little more.

Outa the ones you mentioned I like the synpower. The m1 previously mentioned is in my opinion not as good for fuel dilution if that's an issue for you.

I would at the minimum go with HTO-06 oil, M1 5W30 is one of those oils. If you like xW40 then you should try M1 or Castrol 0W40.

Im not convinced that going thicker is a necessity. Where is the data that the oil temperature is so high that it is necessary?

Also, being "down south" doesn't mean much in that 90F in Canada is the same as 90F in Alabama. Even in a place where 110F is routine, Im not sure it is absolutely critical as a knee-jerk response, data is required.

That said, Id consider an oil that meets Honda HTO-05 turbo spec, or else M1 0w-40.

I agree. M1 5W-30 and 5W30 EP have performed well over nearly 154,000 in my Mazdaspeed 3- with OCIs of @7,500 miles.

Its got a turbo. The turbo will shear the oil down.

Man I just woke up in Rip Van Winkle land. When did Honda ever sell a Turbo 1.8L?
Your K&N is fine but pricey, look at the HONDA S2000 OEM PCX-004 Filtech (though that's pricey too but its got a no leak P-gasket on the base.) It may be too fat to fit, IDK your EX/IC plumbing. Now I don't know what this JDM turbo is but Only a couple widely available OTC oils are true synthetics. I would not Use a current GF5 or GF4 ILSAC passenger car oil in this motor. A 4T Motyorcycle superbike oil should be a decent choice if $$ are a concern - MOBIL M1 4T WAS MAGICALLY GOOD BEFORE THEY REFORMULATED IT A FEW YEARS AGO. I DONT LIKE IT NOW. Sadly missed, IT WAS THE GO-TO SUPER OIL during the heyday of M1 and tri syn formulations.
OTW, look to EURO ACEA A3,B4 30 or 40 grades. Pick your International fave brand. There are a few Bimmers and Mercs Audi around their oil spec has to out there - maybe NAP-A-ing or pepe boyz. Lurk the Euro oil forum here.

Exactly, Integra's didn't come with a Turbo so this is a custom job that is exposing a NA engine to the extra stresses of the added power etc. For this reason alone and the fact that many many times, mistakes are made with these conversions, i'd go XW40.

Use a synthetic. Any 0w40, 5w40, or 10w40 is where I would start with. Install an accurate oil PSI and temp gauge and adjust viscosity for temp or PSI loss.

For the filter, no need for fancy filter. Consider a remotely mounted filter for increased capacity, cooling, flow...
Or, use a full flow oversized PN from Baldwin/Hastings. Kia/Hyundai make a good filter.

I'm glad my turbo hasn't got that memo yet...

+1

M1 0W40 and a M1 oil filter. Hard combination to beat and you can get them at Autozone or Advance as their oil change specials.

If you wanted to buy the oil at Walmmrt (just under $24 for the 5 qt jug) you could go with the Fram Ultra that 901 Memphis recommended. M1 0W40 is hard to beat and truly a bargain when you factor in price.

I may have stated it wrong, sorry if the name is off a bit...

There is "a" Honda turbo spec. That was really my intended point...
