Hello to all.I just picked up an 05 crown Vic and looking for some recommendations for this vehicle. I have the service records for the car it has been serviced by the dealer since new so I think its had motor craft 5w20 synblend all its life. However she has 128,889 on the odometer now and I am thinking it's time to go to a high mileage oil. Will be running a motor craft filter on it and 5k oci's. The plan is to get to 250,000 on this motor which I believe is doable. Thanks

Those modulars will do 500k Mi on pretty much any oil/filter at "reasonable" oci's. Your plan is mostly sound, use whatever you like.

I say mostly, b/c unless you have a leak, or abnormal consumption, you won't see much benefits with the HM oil. It won't hurt anything, but not really nessecary just because you hit a certain number of miles.

Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Blend & a Motorcraft filter will be perfect for 5,000 mile oil changes. You will make it past 250,000! Super reliable cars.

i am using 5w20 QSUD with a Motorcraft Filter in My Moms 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis With about 55,000 miles on it and it runs like new. In the summer i put 5 quarts of QSUD 5w20 and one quart of 5w30 qsud because that is what i had. All good!

And this ^^^

There are a gajillion taxis out there that started life as police cars. They easily reach 250,000 and frequently much higher on whatever oil and filter the maintenance barn gets from the low bidder. Your 128,xxx is barely broken in. Use a decent oil and the Motorcraft filter and sleep well.

Any quality fluids from reputable manufactures and the same with filters. Motorcraft wix and baldwin are good filters.

Do at least one OCI before deciding on a switch to a high mileage oil. Don't change what's been working unless you have a reason in hand. The pre-2000 4.6L Crown Vics were spec'd for 5w-30. So in my mind there's nothing magic about 5w-20 other than CAFE mileage standards.

Hi there Hoss,

I'd do one interval of some High Mileage oil then go back to the syn-blend or similar. I use MC syn-blend and MC oil filter in the Toyota Matrix.

No need for a "high mileage" oil. We've got 300,xxx miles on our Crown Vic and not once did we ever use a high mileage oil.
We've used Havoline,Motorcraft, and have settled on Trop Artic for the rest of the time we drive this vehicle.

X2 Completely agree. My MGM at 141,XXX still runs great. I've never seen the need to change to high mileage oils. In my old age, I figure if it isn't broke, I don't try to fix it.

Congrats on your new CV!

My 2008 CV was fleet maintained on 5W-20 syn-blend until I bought it with 117K miles. It runs fine with no leaks or oil burning. Looks very clean inside from what I can see down the fill hole. I took it to a shop that changed the oil with Napa 5W-20 syn-blend (similar to Maxlife but without the extra seal conditioners) and a Napa Proline (Wix silver) filter. Ran it for 4300 miles. The Proline performed well though it only has a nitrile ADBV... oil pressure was always up immediately upon starting the car.

Kendall has a video on Youtube where they ran a fleet of Crown Vic taxis on their GT-1 synthetic 5W-20 for 100K miles with 10K OCIs, then tore down the engines. The engines were pristine.

My current fill is Pennzoil Ultra Plat 5W-30 and a Wix filter. The Wix has a silicone ADBV and better filter media than the Motorcraft. The car runs noticably quieter on this oil than it did on 5W-20. I'm going to stay with 5W-30 PUP or Kendall and Wix filters for 1 year, 8K OCIs.

I have a mostly short tripped(likely all short before I got it in '10 at 33K mi) '98 Grand Marquis that is about to turn 71K miles... I've been using M1 5w-30 HM since last change at just over 65K mi, has cut consumption from 2500 to 5000 mi per qt... Unless someone gives me some std oil, it'll never see anything but HM as long as I own it...

Thanks for the rep!ies most appreciated. No leaks and no consumption problems that I know of. I'm asking this cause I was a Chevy guy til Darla died the other day. Thats the name I gave my 01 Silverado 4.3. She was dependable and got 303,897 on her before the transmission went out. So I thought it was time for a change. I haven't owned a ford and the shop I am at don't see a lot of crown vics in there so this vehicle is new to me. We carry Kendall motor oil at the shop so that's what the Vic will probably get just won't use the shop filters

Congrats! Welcome to the family. You can easily get 400k out of these engines. No need to get HM oil unless you find yourself topping it off due to leaks/burning. That said, the motorcraft fl-820s is a wonderful filter. You can also go with the fram ultra xg2. For 5k OCI's go with MS5K (mobil super). If you want to go synthetic they are having a deal at AAP with QSUD and purolator filter for $19.99. Remember the CV takes 6 qts though. Other than that, I would recommend buying at wal-mart as they generally have the best prices for filters and oil.

I wonder when they made the switch from 5w-30 to 5w-20. My '00 owners manual says 5w-30.

I was at Walmart tonight and they sell the motor craft fl820s filter for 3.97. That's less then what the owner of the shop I work at pays for the Napa pro select filters we use. And I am not real impress with the proselect filters. They seem to be cheaply made.
