I see no reason not to try a 15W40 oil. Forget additives. Check with mechanical gauge.

If this has TBI then don't let it get low of gas.

I would be inclined to roll in some new bearings.

A 96 would be a vortec, not the TBI, but I think either one I sensitive to low fuel level taking out the fuel pump.

I used to see a lot less fuel pump failures on TBI engines but that's probably more to do with the low fuel pressure required to keep them running compared to the injectors on the vortec 350

That's exactly what I would do, fill it up with 20W50. I would use either PYB or QSAD for the high moly.

If you aren't inclined to look at doing the rod bearings (which are probably what's worn) then I'd step up to a 15w-40, skip the Lucas, and see if that makes things acceptable. It'll go many more miles on that setup.

There are many 15W-40 oils that also carry gasoline engine ratings, Delvac 1300 Super at Walmart (API SN) is one of them.

As @kschachn noted and gave an example of, most of these oils are dual rated, so while they have a ton of diesel approvals, they are also rated for gas use.
