Hey guys... I'd appreciate advice on what type of oil I should use for my high mileage car. Info below.

1. What kind of vehicle you have - 1997 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4 wheel drive 213,000 miles
2. What your owner's manual says -- ?
3. Where you live - North Alabama
4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?) - Drive on the hard side
5. What your daily drive is like (short trips? long trips? city? highway?) about a 20 mile (one way) city drive
6. Whether your car has any known problems - No significant issues

Like to go 5,000 miles between changes. Have been using purolator filters and Valvoline MaxLife 10w30.

Thanks!

Your selections are great for your area and with no issues....

Goals are to keep her running strong as long as possible.

Sounds like I'm on the right track. I just wanted to verify with the experts here. Thanks for the input guys!

Manual states 5,000 mile oil change interval, do I follow that for our 1997 4Runner Limited with 100,000+ more miles than yours, NO.

If your 3.4L V6 is clean inside I'd recommend any SN rated synthetic blend for 7,500 miles +/- 3000 miles or once a year whichever comes first depending on your driving style or an SN rated full synthetic for 10,000 miles +/-3000 miles or once a year. I currently have Mobil 1 Extended Performance and I plan on going a full 15,000 miles on it. Also change out your PCV valve and if your valve cover gasket is leaking change it out. I check the oil level every fill up and it doesn't burn too much oil at all, around 1/4 quart every 5,000 miles. Not bad for for an engine with more than 300,000 miles.

These 3rd Gen 4Runners are true keepers if well maintained as exemplified by this man's 4Runner: LINK. He's got more than 600,000 miles on original engine & trans.

Good Luck with yours!
