I ordered a (4 Pack) of Subaru engine oil filters & crush gaskets through Amazon for my 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5 4 cyl non-turbo engine. The crush gaskets were 17mm rather than 13mm which were on the drain plug which caused me to check the specs on my order. I had ordered part# 15208AA12A filter and gasket Genuine Subaru 1990-2018.
I rechecked the order and discovered there were different filter gasket combinations for different models with the same engine and mine should have been a part #15208AA15A instead of 12A. The crush washer was OK for reuse but I am wondering about the difference in filter and if it can be left on and used on my vehicle or the oil changed at an earlier interval, or I should replace the filter with the correct #15208AA15A. I used Subaru's recomended Idemitsu Full Synthetic 0W-20 Engine Oil SN/GF-5 - 5 Quart and perhaps I have 3 filters and washers available.

They appear to be short and long versions of the same filter, the 15A about a half inch longer than the 12A. I wouldn't worry much about it, personally.

I had a similar question for the oil filter and my dealer said that the reason why they have 2 types ia because in some engine bays the longer one won't fit, but that they are the same filter in all aspects.

I wouldn't change the filter. For years I've used various brands part number filters on my Ford Escorts that were not the actual number they listed. I've had 5 different Escorts over the years some were 1.9L SOHC and some were 2.0L SOHC, they've been fine on all of them. I've even used some of them on my riding mowers with Kohler 19HP and 20HP engines. The filters are the same size as the one listed and the threads are the same. Only difference is I bought these when a store was closing out their oil filters years ago and had them marked down to anywhere from about $ .25 up to around a $1 each instead of paying $4 each. Been using on them for probably at least 15 years without any problems.

Don't be worried about the bypass boogeyman.

Send that stuff back. I have a 2018 Outback 2.5L and have used the Fram Ultra oil filter without issue. Don't be worried about the bypass boogeyman.

There's the Wix XP/Napa Platinum for that. It has the wire-backed synthetic media with the correct Subaru bypass :)

I can easily get the correct Subaru filter and crush gasket at my dealer for around 5-6 dollars. I wouldn't waste time with a "pig in a poke" from Amazon just to save a couple dollars and end up with a substitute.

Wix makes fine products that happen to be endorsed by the Bypass Boogeyman 👻

Lol I like that “bypass boogeyman“ 😂! In 76k miles with my 3.6 outback I have yet to have one issue (even startup tick or idle noise) on any non oem filter I’ve run. I have a PH9688 on there now for a short run with conventional that I needed to use up and still experiencing zero issues. Have an XG7317 on the girlfriends crosstrekand also zero issues there.

We have four Subaru’s in the family and I have yet to experience One issue or bad UOA due to the bypass spec. Im 100% convinced it’s only a problem on the internet.

So you park long enough so Amazon has the campground address to deliver to? Where do you recycle the used oil. since the Subaru must be on a tow dolly?:D
