Tommorow afternoon, I will be trading in my 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier 4-door sedan for a 'new' 2003 Mazda Tribute LX V-6 with 106k miles.

I bought the Cavalier in July, 2005 when it was 3 years old and had 56,000 miles (89,000km) on it. It was a very generous wedding present from a distant uncle to make life easier for my upcoming wedding in October 2005.

The 'plan' was to keep it for 2-3 years, get us through our 'start', and then move up to something newer/nicer. I was a bit hesitant to get a GM, as I'd had bad luck with one before, but it was far better value than other vehicles in that price range.

Well, we've now owned it for 5 years, 8 months, longer than I've owned ANY vehicle before, and it has 157,000 miles on it, more than I've put on any other vehicle. My wife got her licence on it; her younger brother got his licence on it; and we started to teach her youngest brother to drive on it as well.

It's made countless road trips, including helping said licenced brother go to college, it's hauled more stuff - from shopping, to camping, to yard-saleing than I ever though it would, it's been in a few nasty bumps and bang-ups, including having one door 'totaled' a month after we got it. As you know, it's also survived some really, really long OCI's that most wouldn't have done as well on.

And through all this, it's been WAY more reliable and trustworthy than I ever though it would be - yeah, it's had some issues, but overall, it's been a real warrior. It's completely restored my faith in GM and domestic auto makers, and I can't say anything really bad about it.

With all this love, I should prolly fix it, but it's really tired, and just needs too much. It's done it's time, and deserves it's rest, whatever that may be. So I'll move one with another vehicle, which is a whole pile of 'firsts' for me - first SUV, first V-6, first 5W-20 vehicle(!)...but I won't forget this little sedan.

Thanks for everything, little car!

wanted to be the first to post!!!

ok, now I'll go read it all

Those 3rd gen Cavaliers are a pretty good car by any measure. Anyone who doesn't think so probably doesn't have very broad experience with them. I had a '95 Cavaler in the family with about 200k miles when it was sold a few years ago and it was in good running condition and everything worked on it. The body was still tight and not one suspension part needed to be replaced in all those miles. Just tires and brake pads/rotors for the suspension and brakes. I think the later models like yours were a little better but the earlier models actually had nicer interior materials.

It was a joy reading about it over the year(s)

You'll enjoy the tribute, nice machine. I always believed the cavalier brand should have followed through. It built a reputation of being a solid car that can take it's share of abuse. I owned a 2-door the year they started labeling them with the "Z22" badge!

My GF has a 2002 Cavalier 2.2 OHV 5-speed manual coupe that she bought new in Sept. 01 and it now has 103,000 and knock on wood has only had to have a fuel pump replaced. It has been a great little car and it still averages 25 mpg. It could use a paint job, but I can't see putting that much into a car that is maybe work $2k.

sneaky guy. I had a feeling that you'd sell it after all the abuse and 20k+ OCIs on DINO oil you've put that poor car through.

Drive it off a cliff.

Congrats on the new-ish vehicle.

Those Cavaliers were amazing..The 21K OCI you did with it with plain old Dino proved it as the report came back overall good to my amazement.

I am sure you like your Tribute...I hope you do not plan on long OCI's with it..It looks way 2 nice for that.

I'd just like to clarify something very clearly:

I'm trading the car in to the dealer for $200 cash, and that is all he can get for the scrap value of the car - it's most likely going to be crushed after this. I've checked.

Of all things wrong with the car, the engine IS NOT one of them - it runs like a top - does not burn any oil, has a tiny VC gasket leak, and that's it - it fires up effortlessly everytime.

I am NOT getting rid of this car b/c I've abused it into the ground - it still runs fine, it just has a multitude of other wear and tear items that are done on it, and aren't worth endlessly chasing.

So DO NOT go and accuse me of trying to pull a fast one on anyone!!

This little 'ute will be absolutely babied...trust me.

:P

Sounds like you've got some guilt in leaving the old girl.

It did well by you, but at the end of it, your vehicle is designed to get you around. That is about convenience (rather than taking the bus etc.). If it starts to be a headache with repairs and such, then you are losing some of the convenience you are willing to pay for.

Nothing wrong with that when you think that a main function of a car is to provide more convenience.

Is yours a 2.2L?

I have 198k on my 2002 2.4L.

Only major problem was a bad fuel pump. Engine and auto xmission work great.

$200 for a 02 chevy cavalier with 157k miles?? my 96 sunfire with 171k miles must be worth $-500 bucks.

Yes, it's a 2.2. I've been debating the replacement of the fuel pump just as a preventative measure.

Yep, they pretty much are. Besides the annoying squeaks, they have been great cars. I can say that because I've FIVE of them in the last 15 years. And every J body I've owned (87,89,93,03,04) has been nearly flawless for the time I've owned them. They darn near run forever.

I still own the last 2 (03,04), and both have been good to me. Knock on wood, the only thing I've had to replace in either was a bad fuel pump in the 03. It's too bad the rust will get them before they stop running...I had to junk the 93 @157k and the 89 @ 211k due to rust.

Who knows addguy, you might just get another. I'm planning on holding on to the 04 for a while (since it doesn't see salt)..

We ran through a few "J's" here during child rearing.

Cheap, durable, nothing but good stuff to say.

Even a popped head gasket was an easy fix on the 2.2 pushrod motor.

Really. Sell it yourself and you'd easily quadruple your money.

Congrats on the new car! Those are nice SUVs.

I don't know what condition the car is in, but considering they are only giving you $200 for it, would it not be worth keeping as a cheap run-around?

Kind of makes ME feel sad, considering your experiences with this little car.

Hey guys,

I'll admit it, there IS some guilt about getting rid of this little machine. It still has life left in it, I know that.

We had originally planned on repairing it, and getting another 2 years out of it. We got a rough estimate, and the basics just to get by was about $2100....but there was other stuff 'on the horizon'. Being realistic, keeping it on the raod safetly for 2 years would have cost nearly $4k....when I worked out arrangements to get another $3k, and we started thinking about what we WANT out of a vehicle, starting over was a no-brainer.

And yes, $200 is a pittiance as a price on it - but, I only have 1 parking spot, no visitor parking, and no plce to park it while I try to sell it. Also, I just don't have the patience to deal with phone calls about the car, trying to set up appointments, people who want to take it here and there to get checked out...I just really can't deal with that. So, getting something, and NOT having to do that work just fine for me!

My wife and I took it out for one long last drive last night, and i did some running around with it this morning, so it's had a good last go, and has rolled 252,000km.

So it's all good!
