Odd tire question

I was really concerned more with snow tires. I wanted to go with four of the exact same tire size on separate set of wheels for winter. Much more selection of tires for the fronts than the rears.


Pirelli had J (Jaguar) rated Winter tyres for the X351 in the standard sizes. I think in the US you could have your XJ fitted with All Seasons, whereas in Europe Summer and Winter tyres was the approach.

I would just have a second set of wheels with Winter tyres on for the colder months.

For my LandCruiser, I have two sets of wheels/tires:

- One set of 3-season P285/60-18 tires for summer/highway use
- One set of BFG A-T T/A KO LT285/70-17 tires for winter/offroad use

This allows me the best tire/wheel combo for all conditions - and I can switch them over at will. I really don't like hassling with mounting/dismounting tires onto different wheels at least twice/year.

For winter use only, why not buy a cheaper aftermarket set of wheels to leave the winter tires on? That would make the most sense to me. Or maybe the base model IS alloys fit, or another Lexus factory alloy. Find some on Craigslist and have a dedicated winter wheel and tire setup.

For a winter tire/wheel package Tire Rack will let you build a 17" package, so brakes must not be an issue...

Turns out to be a relatively easy answer. Spoke with Tire Rack, local tire place and did some research on the Club Lexus forum. Seems I can run the front sized tires all around even though the wheels differ in width. Purchased 4 Nokian Hakka R 225 x 40 x 18. Will use these on the stock wheels.

Really wanted a second set of wheels, but evidently every changeover requires a trip to the Lexus service department to reprogram the computer.

You can get a techstream knockoff from ebay for very cheap money that could/ should program TPMS. Give it a look see.

Sounds like the skinny tires are a great plan. What they engineered traction-wise for 10/10ths dry pavement won't fly in the snow anyway.

I would just ignore the TPMS light and check tire pressure occasionally. I would try to protect the stock wheels... Ask the dealer how much a replacement costs.

225/40 tire on an 8.5" wide rim is a good recipe for getting the rim lip chewed up, but other than that, it'll work.
