Yesterday I changed my fill of Mobil1 EP 5W30 and a Mobil1 EP filter to Pennzoil Platinum and a PureOne, on my 2002 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder. I made two observations:

1) When I was under the car checking for leaks after first firing it up, the filter did not get as hot as with Mobil1. The oil pressure light went out after 2 seconds of firing up the engine, so the pressure was good. The engine has no in block bypass so all the oil has to pass through the filter. Different thermal properties?

2) With Mobil1, SS or EP, after shutting down the engine in the garage, I can hear rather loud noise of oil dropping down to the pan; with PP, the drop noise is much softer, and I have to lean over to the front of the car to hear it.

Engine runs smooth like a stick of butter on PP, even it is on the thinner side. 200 miles of round trip today @ 70 MPH MAX, 55 MPH average (highway + city) yielded 33.8 MPG (EPA 24/33), according to my ScanGaugeII. No previous data from Mobil1.

If it is true that Mobil 1 really is a Group III oil now and Pennzoil a Group III as well than I can't see any reason to not use the Pennzoil Platinum. It is cheaper and probably provides about the same level of performance.

SHHHHH!!!! If you guys don't keep your mouths shut ...PP will be the next Havoline or ..heaven forbid ..the next GC

They'll either rebadge it and up the price ..or there will be a run on it and you won't be able to find it.

I'm just amazed by this:

It was like "tin, tin, tin" drop noise, almost metallic. I was alway amazed that I could hear it so well, in an enclosed system.

That tin, tin, tin noise is the money Mobil is making off us. Keep buying it, I own alot of XON stock!

I'm thinking M1 needs to start dropping their price to at least by half.

I still won't buy it anymore.

Other Group IIIs like Platinum & QTorque Power have great sales (after rebate) that puts the price in the $2.80 price range. There are other deals too! Hopefully, Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic or even Synpower will someday be free after rebate again too.

Times 3, exactly my thoughts.

Park the truck in the garage, close the overhead door, and a "ting"..."ting" comes from the cat heat shields, like big rain drops on the old time sheet metal shed roofs.
