Obesity

I don’t suck down Big Macs or inhale whoppers but I’m a proud contributor to the obesity brigade. I battle weight for years I just enjoy good food in quantities I need to throttle off from. Take it tonight 3 squares of homemade cornbread View attachment 300599
I like cornbread. I eat a lot of sweets. I eat everything in moderation. Winter is tough.

That’s my problem the sweets don’t get me. It’s breads rice and just be greedy taking big portions and going for 2nds…3rds. A lot of my deal is I am a nervous eater and past 6 months I got a lot going on so my eating has been bad was 208 went to 187 now I’m back bouncing the 200 bar. My blood labs look like a bad UOA. it’s amazing I haven’t blown a head gasket yet no joke.

If you're eating a lot of sweets you're words that is not eating in moderation that's call overeating.
Now you said I had a donut last month that's moderation.

DNA has a lot to play in this game. Both my parents were heavy, both my wife's parents were heavy, aunt's, uncles on both sides , heavy. I know people who can consume thousands of calories a day, mostly carbs, and not gain a pound. Battle of the Bulge has been a life long project for my family and myself. Just gonna keep at it it, as usual, to keep the doctor's quiet. I did lose a ton of weight in the 80's. But that's because it snowed...... A LOT......Ah, the decade of decadence. It was FUN !!!!!!!!!

Not sure if you mean snow as in the precipitation--or snow as in, well, the other stuff one can ingest for fun.

The 80's was known for the latter and all.

People want cheap food.

Not sure what this means. As a rule, people want cheap everything. If you are poor, you eat crappy food for reasons that have to do with how we build ghettos in this country. Ghettos have fast, garbage food and liquor stores. You have to walk a long way to find a super market.

Another thing I noticed, our food likely lacks nutrients

This is a problem.

and that is probably the reason we eat so much in this country.

I doubt it. The body achieves satiety on junk food just fine. The body does not say, "Hey, I just eat 12 Happy Meals, but I'm still hungry because there was no nutritional value in my food."

Being deficient in nutrients can make people feel not quite satisfied with a normal portion and go for seconds. But also lots of cheap food is fortified with the basic vitamins and minerals, wonder bread, milk, cereal. So its probably not too common?.
Iodine deficiency is becoming a problem because some people only eat processed food which often doesn't contain iodized salt(table salt is usually iodized). Or on the other end of the scale, is people only using specialty salts which don't always have enough iodine in them either.

Not the precipitation snow. Never lost weight on that type before. Speaking of Precipitation Snow, a recent study just revealed there is so much plastic in it, to not to let you're kids eat it. Coming from the oceans. Pulverized over decades in the ocean, and being sucked into the clouds. Same with rain. Don't drink it. Full of plastic. Found it in the North and South Poles, and everywhere else when the study was conducted. Also found in top soil where farmers grow food.

And that's why America is fat wow

Heavy or big boned ?

Actually, both...My parents battled fat, My sister's still battle fat, I battle fat. We all have to watch our weight. Listen, I'm no doctor or nutritionist. But I do believe DNA plays a role in metabolism. Just my 2 cents. I'll leave it at that.

I do too, or at least hereditary traits over hundreds and thousands of generations that allowed people in certain regions to metabolize certain foods better than others.

But overall I think it's also only a small piece of a bigger buffet....I mean puzzle.

Couldn't lose any weight no matter what I tried, just kept staying the same or gaining. Got to 199 and realized I need to do something because I don't want to see 200

I also had hypothyroidism and the doctor suggested I just wait and see if it fixes itself before going on medication

Saw a nutritionist because it was free, and as it turns out, all the stuff I was trying was not a good idea. Now I eat a LOT of protein (160g/day), with a calorie deficit (1700/day) and I've lost 38lb since February

I actually find myself eating substantially MORE than I used to, its just not super high calorie foods. Trying to skip meals does nothing for you, and makes it much worse

And, funnily enough, no more thyroid problems now I'm eating the correct amount of fat per day

I have a lesion on my Pituitary Gland ( The Master Gland ). Inoperable / non -cancerous, for now. Located near the base of the brain. Controls Thyroid Gland and Testosterone production. Have no more Testosterone production, need to take injections. The lesion is wreaking havoc on my Thyroid gland. Being medicated for that. Swings hypo to hyper in one month,,,,and the weight follows. Could be an effect from 2 months at Ground Zero on 9/11, but no cancer, thankfully. Doctor's refuse to remove Thyroid gland because it is not constant hyper. Yeah, I'm a mess. Still recovering from back surgery. Brain MRI 1x a year to monitor lesion for changes. Weight goes up and down as thyroid goes up and down. I'll be 59 in a few months. You already know about my wife. We won't be around into our 70's.

What weight are you now, and what weight do you think you ought to be? Are there any studies on appropriate individual weight versus norming to a statistical target?

I am not an expert, nor am I a doctor, but I've thought about this issue with regard to women. I'm inclined to think that some women need to carry more weight, i.e., being heavier is normal for them. I wonder if we are missing something when we strive to reach an abstract health goal.
6'5" and 255lbs but carry quite a bit of lean mass. At my heaviest, I was 365lbs. I think 250lbs is perfect for me.

Between my back surgery in June, then my extreme hypothyroidism, then my non-existent testosterone, I went from 170 to 197 lbs. Back surgery in June, and to this day, 9-17-25, I am still not allowed to pick up more than a gallon of milk. Hypothyroidism slows down metabolism, which makes matters worse, low T slow down down metabolism which makes matters worse. I was 5'10", now I'm 5'6" due to collapsing/ deteriorating discs in my spine. 2 nd surgery to replace one of them. I eat like a bird, but doctors are working on Thyroid and Testosterone issues. Will be starting Physical Therapy next week. I walk 1.75 miles a day now, and still haven't lost a pound. Endocrine system is all messed up., and my back. 1 year recovery for that mess. I'm tryin..... Protein shakes are pretty much my diet, and coffee, no sugar.
