I know alot of people are happy with their less than 20$ chinese elm327 adapters. I however had minor problems with the 2 I had.

I purchased a bluetooth obd MX adapter.. it has quite a few advantages over the generic ones..
(for 150$)
Right now they are doing a promotion on their new WIRELESS OBX MX (wireless not bluetooth)

Its the latest generation retail is 120$ their promotion is 120-70=50$**

if anyone is interested these are top notch
see details on their ad here.

also this one works well with iphone and Ipad among other devices.

Note this is a kickstarter campaign to fund the production so delivery will be delayed.. however at 50$ this is a crazy steal!! the device is much faster reading obd-2 and more updates per second.. also supports some other protocols

another major advantage is it is less than 1/2 the size of the generic elm327 adapters.. This would also be perfect if you want to run a small tablet as a status monitor (similar to scangauge only better)

Example a generic 7" android tablet running torque with customized readouts on anything from MPG to water temp, to exhaust catalyst temp.

can read trouble codes and real time sensor info quite well on most makes and models.

I've got the OBLink MX bluetooth adapter and while I haven't used it as much as I thought I would, I am very impressed with its speed.

The OBDLink software it comes with (I've run it on Android and Windows) is pretty functional, and running Torque Pro on Android, even readings like boost (based on MAP, presumably) respond fast enough to be interesting and usable.

Sure, they're a little more expensive, but the functionality you get with something like this is such a better value than standalone handheld scanners it's ridiculous.

You lost me at the "real time" part. You can't take Wi-Fi on the road "real time." Garage at home yes, road no.

Bluetooth works with your tab or phone on the road.

michaelluscher you might have missed this in the my post

On all of these Bluetooth OBD2 adapters....
There isn't any...

any app that would run on IOS will work fine as the device connects with wireless.

Torque is one of the preferred apps for android.

Could also use this with a windows 8 tablet and windows software.

Also: update since I posted this they are now at the 79$ price point (250 available currently at 8:30pm EST 2/3/14)

it will connect with wireless to your wireless device. It doesnt connect to your router at home.

IE your cell phone has wireless to connect to wi-fi

this has wireless to connect to your phone.

since your phone and the car are staying together "you can take it on the road"

Does anybody know if the OBD MX supports MODE $6 (also known as O2 sensor test data)? Even better, does anybody know if it can interpret and display that data in decoded format?

Wi-Fi is a networking protocol, not the internet. Wi-Fi is essentially no different than Bluetooth, except it has a much greater range.

For that $$$, spend the $85 for the Homemade STN1170 BT
Or the $100 BT Black STN1110 OBDLink MX, for $45, you could have a corded STN1110 red OBDLink SX.
