Farrarfan1, my post about "propaganda" was poking a little fun at the previous poster who indicated that the NYT article was left-leaning and I find the suggestion that the subject of this article, oil, ergo-oil companies as "left leaning" is pretty darned funny.

I can't imagine the NYT (which is a paper I enjoy) could be any more left leaning than another of my favorite periodicals "The Petroleum News" when it comes to articles on oil changes for your automobile.
I always get a kick out of certain "americans" contempt for the NYT and all it's contents. Personally, I think the article was well-done and helpful for its target audience.
Cheers.

Elwood I apologize for missing the point of your post. That one slipped under my sarcasm radar.Cheers back at you.(Hoistng a Sam Adams in your direction).

My main gripe is the fact that the SAE viscosity "descriptors" were not addressed in any detail. The article had a chance to talk to the main confusion the public seems to have with motor oil. His words were fine, but.....no depth:

Quote:

Higher viscosity numbers in general indicate an ability to form thicker oil films, but because friction and the amount of heat generated increase with oil viscosity, oil choice has to be a compromise. Modern engines have extremely smooth contact surfaces that let them use thinner, lower-viscosity oils than in the past.

Oh well. No biggie.

Falconman, please don't get your panties in a knot. I am not accusing anyone of being un-american. The thing that makes america great is the ability to express your own opinion, but that idea seems to escape some folks. I hope that cleared this issue up for you before you lost any more sleep big fella.

Falconman, CITGO is as capitalistic as any other petroleum company, no different from what GAZPROM is doing in Russia, no different than what BP is doing on the North Slope.

Have americans become such little weenies that they can't handle some foreign nutjob like Chavez calling bush a few names? Man, that would be pretty pathetic.

Other than a poor choice of picture to illustrate the starburst and donut symbols what exactly in this article has everyone in such a snit? Nowhere does he advocate 3k changes or any time based oci.He mentions "frequent" changes but that can mean different things to different car owners. He gives a basic explanation of how oil works, what happens to it over the life of the oil and says it needs to be changed. Not exactly the kind of information that's going to send the earth spinning off of it's axis. Propaganda? For what? Come on people lighten up a little.

You have a good point but people could take away the word "frequent" and then stop in an Autozone store and see all the signs on the oil shelves recommending 3Kmi OCI's.

Regards,
paul...

Can't say I saw anything that bad with the article either. In fact I congradulate them on even doing the article. At least it gave some good basic information about engine oil to people that probably knew nothing before reading it. In today's "pay someone else to do the work" society most people don't even know what a API rating is.

I agree 100%. It's unfortunate that people have to bash the article simply because its from the new york times. How childish can you be?

There are lots of people that don't trust anything printed in the NYT and prefer the "fair and balanced" reporting on Fox News. The article seemed OK as a very basic intro to oil, but was not as in depth as I would expect from the NYT. It did forget to make the plug for left hand fasteners as well as encourage the purchase of Citgo Products over those from XOM

Over the years, all of my neighborhood autoparts stores have moved out. I guess these gentrified neighborhoods don't have many folks that turn their own wrenches. I have to go to a town about ten miles away that has a large hispanic population to find auto parts these days.

Thank #@$%! for immigrants or I'd be stuck going to a "QuickyLube"!

Great observation. To find some GC I visited an AutoZone where the only people in the store speaking English were myself and the manager (who was an immigrant from India, LOL, and had that proper British accent)

You'd have a real riot in my small circles. I don't think the NYT could be objective to save the Democrat Party. But hey, it's America, so the laugh is on me.

First of all, I don't care what Chavez says about Bush or anyone else for that matter. I even bought some Citgo oil recently because I got a good deal on it.

But, isn't it hyppocritical for Chavez, a sworn socialist to profit from American capitolism?

Good Observation, my point exactly. Those who disagree with the NYT are no more un-American then those who disagree with Fox. See? It works both ways.

I don't care for the NY Times but that article looks decent to me. I don't like the idea of 10,000 mile oil changes unless somebody is using a synthetic oil and they should have used a gasoline engine API SAE display so that people do not get mixed up. The fact that they use a diesel engine SAE API symbol makes me wonder how well the article was researched. Most people use gasoline engine vehicles.

It is okay as a basic article but it barely skims the surface of motor oil maintenance.

It was obvious that the "frequent change" thing was to ward off folks from venturing into EOCI land. Folks using their oil three times longer than before simply won't do.
Folks who feel the NYT wasn't well prompted to provide that little pearl probably also feel that ol' Chavez throwing a few verbal jabs at Bush, in front of the world body, was nothing to be upset about. In fact, quite alright.

The more I read from intelligent Americans these days, the more amazed and ashamed I am.

BOOSS,
Enjoyed your response

I spent my career on Alaska's North Slope, living with your kind of people 24/7. Fortunately, there were very good wages to make the sacrifice worth it!! Cheers.

Not sure about the "your kind of people" comment but hey,

just the same. Open dialogue is what it is all about.

My kind, eh?
