Not big on Toyota cartridge style oil filters

I work on cars for a living, and I actually like the Toyota cartridge setup. I certainly prefer spin-ons, but I like the ability to drain the housing first and make less mess. This does get complicated, however, by the occasional 200 lb gorilla that likes to tighten either the housing or the plug as tight as possible. I had to use a 26" 1/2" drive ratchet to remove a housing today. Luckily I didn't strip or break the aluminum housing or my cap tool!

I actually find that I like it too on my '07 Rav4 V6. Once I figured it out, I didn't find it that complicated. Heck, there are even pictures with proper torque numbers and the sequence in which to do it on the OEM filter cartridge box. Maybe its different on the '11 Camry due to where its located or something, but there's almost no mess when I do mine. I also like not having to cut open a can to look at the element.
 
It's just that the little subdrain in the filter housing adds unnecessary complexity to the oil change.

My BMW's have a cartridge filter with a similar filter housing removed by a cap wrench. But BMW does not include a plugged, gasketed drain in the filter housing.
 
Ive had 2000 328i (E46) and 2006 330i (E90) and always loved the Engine bay factory cartridge style is very mess free easy way to deal with filter changes - if anything Japanese and American markets need to adapt this style it creates less waste by only throwing away filters and not metal cans also.
