Between the oil usage, the required coolant tabs and the head gaskets, most third world countries would reject that engine. I have a co-worker who finally gave up on one a couple of weeks ago. He is now a happy man.

They leak a lot of oil as well as burn it.

The Northstar engines that had a lot of issues must not have been taken care of early in life. My son's 1999 Olds Aurora has 120K miles and is running great(knock on wood). I have heard of these engines going 300K+ miles and longer. Like everything else it depends on who is maintaining it.
