Northstar oil change

Well my girlfriend's 94 Cadillac DeVille check oil light came on today. When I dropped over by her house she told me about it and I took a look at the dipstick and it was completly dry. I want to change her oil tomorrow. What do you guys recommend to put in?

Those things drink oil. Some type of high-end synthetic for sure.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 or 0W-40.

The "Northstar" (4.0, not 4.6) in my 97 Aurora called for 10w30. I usually used Valvoline MaxLife full syn. I also used Pennzoil Platinum and SuperTech Full Synthetic.

just put the cheapest conventional oil you can find in that turd. they use so much oil that spending money on a synthetic oil is a waste of money.

I'd put in Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30 and check it every month to see how much it might eat. After a while it'll stop and stablize. In the meantime check her manual and see what Cadillac prefers weight wise for her engine. My guess it'll be either 10w30 OR 5w30 which is what's called for in my newly bought Impala SS.

Many Northstars burned oil when new and leak it when old. I would use any name brand 10w30 conventional or high mileage oil and then check it often.

At MOST, go with a cheap High Mileage oil.....

I'm pretty sure my 4.0 took 7.5 quarts... it had less than 100,000 miles and it burned about a quart every 3,000 miles.

I would use a less expensive synthetic 10w30 to get a baseline, like SuperTech --or something on sale or with a rebate...

I would use SuperTech High Mileage 10w30 in it.

Two VEGA motors welded together.LOL.Several TSBs on Northstar oil usage.Updated pistons,chemical that is put into cylinders and has to sit a certain time frame to loosen carbon in the ring lands.Use a decent cheap oil and dump it in.Gm called it a WORLD CLASS ENGINE.Third world I guess.

I use Maxlife Semi syn 10W30 in my son's Northstar and it works very well. It cut down on burning oil and runs very smooth after two oil changes with the Maxlife semi syn. Walmart for around $15 for 5 quarts but you need 7 quarts for that engine.
